A silane film that can be used in a wide range of environments, on metals of engineering interest, as a standalone process or as a primer for a top-coating by common paint systems. The film generally comprises: a) at least one bis-silane; b) a water soluble or dispersible polymer; c) nanoparticles; and, d) a water soluble solvent. It is also within the scope of the present invention to include a leachable inhibitor into the silane film. In sum, the present invention teaches a silane composition that may be applied by dipping, wiping, spraying, brushing, or other conventional techniques, whereby the film composition provides a metal treatment that is water soluble and may provide the availability of the coating to 'heal' by utilizing a leachable inhibitor whenever damage occurs from scrapes or scratches.

Silane coatings for metal

Acyloxy silane treatments for metals

Adhesion of rubber to a variety of metals (aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel and brass) is effectively achieved by the application of an organofunctional silane (I) and a non-organofunctional silane (II) to the requisite surface. Preferably, the organofunctional silane (I) is a vinyltrialkoxysilane with the non-organofunctional silane (II) preferably comprising an alkoxylated substituted alkyl silane. The silanes (I) and (II) are at least partially hydrolyzed and are normally provided in the form of a EtOH/H O solution. Bonded joints formed by these adhesive treatments can withstand fuel degradation tests indicating that the treatments can be used, for example, to bond metal and rubber surfaces in automotive and other environments in which the joined parts will be contacted by fuels, oil and/or organic solvents.

Rubber to metal bonding by silane coupling agents

The present invention relates to galvanized steel having a high aluminum content in the coating, as well as a batch hot-dip galvanization process for making such steel. The galvanized steel herein has a coating comprising an inner layer of intermetallic iron aluminum compounds, such as Fe Al (which may have some zinc present), and an outer layer of intermetallic zinc aluminum compounds containing from about 17% to about 40% (preferably about 22%, the Zn&mdash;Al eutectoid) aluminum (which may have some iron present). The batch hot-dip galvanization process for making such steel comprises: (a) fluxing the steel by electroless plating on the surface of the steel of a metal such as tin, copper or nickel; and (b) dipping the fluxed steel into a molten galvanization bath comprising zinc and from about 17% to about 40% aluminum.

High aluminum galvanized steel

A method of treating a metal substrate by applying a first coating treatment solution of 0.1% by volume of at least one silane, wherein the silane consists only of a multi-functional silane having at least two trisubstituted silyl groups, wherein the substituents are individually chosen from the group consisting of alkoxy and acetoxy, and wherein the multi-functional silane has been at least partially hydrolyzed and wherein the first coating treatment solution has a pH of less than about 7.

Method of preventing corrosion of metals using silanes

An improved fluxing method for the galvanization of steel, particularly batch galvanization, is disclosed. In this process, a metallic element is deposited (for example, by electroless plating) on the surface of the steel sheet or other article prior to its being dipped in the galvanization bath. Preferred metals for use in this fluxing process are tin, copper, nickel, with tin being more preferred, and mixtures of copper and tin being most preferred. This metallic film layer has a thickness between about 5 and about 50 nm. The process of the present invention provides a number of benefits when compared to conventional fluxing processes: for example, it is compatible with the inclusion of aluminum in the galvanization bath; it permits a greater time delay between the fluxing and galvanization operations; and it eliminates the formation of hydrogen chloride or other toxic fumes when the fluxed article is dipped in the molten zinc galvanization bath. Additionally, the present process permits the combination of the fluxing and pickling steps into a single step, providing a shorter and more efficient galvanization process than is conventionally used. The fluxing method may also be used in a continuous galvanization process.

Thixotropic, lubricious coatings are provided on the web or surface area surrounding a valve slit or the like in medical, needleless coupling sites. The coating comprises a combination of fluorinated polyalkyl ether and a thixotropic agent such as fumed silica.

Methods and compositions for increasing lubricity of rubber surfaces

A method of preventing corrosion of a metal sheet, comprising the steps of: providing a metal sheet chosen from the group consisting of coated steel sheet, aluminum sheet and aluminum alloy sheet; and applying a solution containing at least one hydrolyzed vinyl silane to the metal sheet. A coating of paint or other polymer may be applied directly on top of the vinyl silane coating.

Method of preventing corrosion of metal sheet using vinyl silanes

A method of preventing corrosion of metals using silanes. The method comprises applying a first treatment solution directly onto the surface of the metal, wherein the first treatment solution contains at least one multi-functional silane having at least two trisubstituted silyl groups, and wherein the substituents are individually chosen from the group consisting of alkoxy and acetoxy. An optional second treatment solution containing an organofunctional silane may also be employed, particularly if the metal is to be painted.
