An integrated photonic device for wavelength division multiplexing comprises: a wavelength-splitting/combining component configured to be re-used for both splitting a single signal to be split, wherein the signal to be split comprises plural wavelengths, to plural split signals, wherein each of the plural split signals is related to a unique wavelength band, and combining plural signals to be combined, wherein each of the plural signals to be combined is related to a unique wavelength band, to a single combined signal, wherein the wavelength-splitting/combining component comprises at least one output channel for providing an output signal and at least one response channel for receiving a response input signal from a light interaction induced by the output signal, wherein the output channel and the response channel are connected to different ports of the wavelength-splitting/combining component.

Integrated photonic device, a sensor system and a method

A dispersive optical phased array for two-dimensional scanning is disclosed herein. The array comprises antenna blocks positioned adjacent one another. The antenna blocks comprise a plurality of antennas positioned adjacent one another and a plurality of delay lines to couple a coherent source signal to each of the antennas within the block, each delay line having an optical path length. Each of the antenna blocks acts as a dispersive phased array. The antenna blocks are arranged such that the blocks form a larger phased array where the antennas between the blocks are in phase for a discrete set of wavelengths. All antennas over the dispersive phased array can experience the same phase difference such that the beams of the individual antenna blocks align with one of the diffraction orders of the array of blocks.

Dispersive optical phased array for two-dimensional scanning

A sensor for sensing a substance such as for example glucose. The sensor is implantable in the body of a living creature. The sensor has a photonic integrated circuit, e.g. silicon-photonics integrated circuit, for spectrally processing radiation interacting with the sample. A continuous monitoring system can also include such a sensor.

Implantable sensor

An integrated waveguide based spectrometer is described. The spectrometer comprises a sensing region for receiving multi-wavelength radiation for irradiating a sample in the sensing region, a wavelength demultiplexing element arranged for capturing said multi-wavelength radiation after interaction with the sample and for providing a number of wavelength demultiplexed radiation outputs or a number of different groups of wavelength demultiplexed radiation outputs, an integrated modulator for differently modulating the different demultiplexed radiation outputs or different groups of demultiplexed radiation outputs, and a multiplexer element for multiplexing the differently modulated demultiplexed radiation outputs or the differently grouped demultiplexed radiation outputs.

Integrated spectrometers with single pixel detector

An optical device is provided for coupling an external optical signal into a plurality of on-chip photonic sub-circuits provided on a substrate. The optical device comprises: a planar waveguide layer on the substrate; a diverging grating coupler configured to couple the external optical signal to the planar waveguide layer and to thereby create an on-chip diverging optical beam in the planar waveguide layer; and a plurality of channel waveguides formed in the waveguide layer. Each channel waveguide of the plurality of channel waveguides comprises a waveguide transition structure having a waveguide aperture oriented towards the diverging grating coupler. For each channel waveguide of the plurality of channel waveguides the position and the width of the corresponding waveguide aperture and the angle and the shape of the waveguide transition structure are individually selected to capture a predetermined portion of the on-chip diverging optical beam.

Integrated grating coupler and power splitter

A carrier-depletion based silicon waveguide resonant cavity modulator includes a silicon waveguide based resonant cavity. The resonant cavity includes an optical modulation section and an optical power monitoring section. The optical power monitoring section includes an integrated lateral PIN diode including a doping compensated I region having a high defect density and a low net free carrier concentration. The doping compensated I region may be formed by performing a P-type implantation step and an N-type implantation step with overlapping ion implantation windows.

Carrier-depletion based silicon waveguide resonant cavity modulator with integrated optical power monitor

A sensor is described for sensing a substance such as for example glucose. The sensor is implantable in the body of a living creature. The sensor comprises a photonic integrated circuit, e.g. silicon-photonics, based radiation processor for spectrally processing radiation interacting with the sample. A continuous monitoring system also is described using such a sensor.

A sensing device for sensing a substance includes a photonics integrated circuit having a resonator element that supports two different radiation modes, e.g. radiation modes of different polarisation, at a predetermined resonance wavelength. The resonator element is configured to convert a phase change or amplitude change experienced by the two different radiation modes upon formation of a layer of receptor molecules onto a sensing surface of the device into a resonance wavelength shift for the two different radiation modes. The sensing device also includes a detection unit arranged to detect the resonance wavelength shift for the two different radiation modes. The detection unit includes a processor that is configured to derive from the detected resonance wavelength shifts for the two different radiation modes, a layer thickness and refractive index of the layer of receptor molecules.

Methods and systems for sensing

A photonic device having a wavelength-dependent transmission or filter characteristic, comprising: a Splitter Polarization Rotator (SPR) configured to receive an input wave having a first polarization and outputting a first wave having the first polarization and a second wave having a second polarization different from the first polarization; first and second waveguide arms connected to the SPR configured to propagate the first and second waves respectively; and a Polarization Rotator and Combiner for combining the propagated first and second waves; wherein the dimensions of the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm are selected to cancel the influence of an external effect on the wavelength-dependent characteristic. Another aspect of the invention relates to a method for reducing the sensitivity of said integrated photonic device, comprising splitting a polarized light beam, propagating light waves of different through two waveguide arms of specific dimensions, and recombining them.

Integrated photonic devices with reduced sensitivity to external influences

Quantifying a refractive index of a test medium by obtaining spectral data representative for an optical signal being modulated with an optical transfer characteristics of a photonic sensor, the modulation being obtained by combining modulation of a first electromagnetic wave component in an optical filter element with a first periodic transfer spectrum having a first free spectral range and modulation of a second electromagnetic wave component in an optical filter element with a second periodic transfer spectrum having a second free spectral range being different from the first free spectral range. A relative is change induced in the second periodic transfer spectrum by bringing the test medium in proximity with the optical filter element with the second periodic transfer spectrum. The refractive index of the test medium is quantified by determining a wavelength offset of an envelope signal in said spectral data.

Vernier photonic sensor data-analysis

Disclosed are methods for co-integration of active and passive photonic devices on a planarized silicon-based photonics substrate. In one aspect, a method is disclosed that includes providing a planarized silicon-based photonics substrate comprising a silicon waveguide structure, depositing a dielectric layer over the planarized silicon-based photonics substrate, selectively etching the dielectric layer, thereby exposing at least a portion of the silicon waveguide structure, selectively etching the exposed portion of the silicon waveguide structure to form a template, using the silicon waveguide structure as a seed layer to selectively grow in the template a germanium layer that extends above the dielectric layer, and planarizing the germanium layer to form a planarized germanium layer, wherein the planarized germanium layer does not extend above the dielectric layer.

Co-integration of photonic devices on a silicon photonics platform

A photonic integrated circuit () is described comprising at least one signal processing circuit (). The signal processing circuit () comprises at least one input coupling element () for coupling incident light from a predetermined incoupling direction into the photonic integrated circuit (), and at least one output coupling element () for coupling light out of the photonic integrated circuit () into an outcoupling direction. The relation between the incoupling direction and the outcoupling direction is different from a relation according to the law of reflection and the incoupling direction and the outcoupling direction are substantially the same. Furthermore, an optical sensor probe () comprising such a photonic integrated circuit () is disclosed. In some embodiments, the optical sensor probe () comprises an optical fiber () having a first facet and comprises a sensing element physically attached to the first facet, wherein the sensing element comprises said photonic integrated circuit ().
