A motion transfer apparatus comprising a frame; at least one wheel shaft operably coupled to at least one wheel, the at least one wheel shaft rotatable on the frame; a gear assembly coupled to the at least one wheel shaft; at least one pedal engaging the gear assembly and movable by an appendage within a predetermined angular range to apply a force; at least one crank arm with a predetermined length coupled to the at least one pedal and to the gear assembly for applying the force directly from the pedal to the gear assembly to rotate the at least one wheel; and a restorative member generating a restorative force to return the pedal and the at least one crank arm from a lower stroke position to an upper stroke position.

A mechanism for converting reciprocal motion to rotary motion. A pair of driving members are mounted to undergo reciprocal up-and-down movement about a first axis. A pair of driving chains are drivingly connected to the respective driving members so that reciprocal up-and-down movement of the driving members transmits respective driving forces to the driving chains. A driven member is mounted for undergoing rotational motion in one direction of rotation about a second axis different from the first axis. A drive unit transfers, via the driving forces of the driving chains, reciprocal up-and-down movement of the driving members to rotational motion of the driven member in the one direction of rotation.

Mechanism for converting reciprocal motion to rotary motion

A motion transfer mechanism for transferring reciprocal motion to rotary motion comprises at least one driving member having front and rear end portions terminating, respectively, in front and rear ends and mounted to undergo reciprocal motion about a first axis located closer to the rear end than the front end of the driving member. At least one rotary member is mounted to undergo angular displacement about a second axis. An interconnecting member connects the driving member to the rotary member, such that reciprocal motion of the driving member effects angular displacement of the rotary member about the second axis. At least one driven member is mounted to undergo rotary motion in one direction of rotation about the second axis. A transfer device drivingly connects the rotary member to the driven member for transferring angular displacement of the rotary member to rotary motion of the driven member in the one direction of rotation. In this manner, the reciprocal motion of the driving member about the first axis is effectively transferred to rotary motion of the driven member in the one direction of rotation without requiring the application of a substantial force.

Motion transfer mechanism for transferring reciprocol motion to rotary

There is provided an occupant-propelled land vehicle, such as a bicycle, having a frame, at least one front wheel, at least one rear wheel, and a seat for the rider of the vehicle, supported by the frame, wherein two levers, each having a front end and a back end, are pivoted on the frame on each side forwardly of the rear wheel and at a point substantially closer to the back end than to the front end. Two rigidly interconnected and spaced-apart parallel discs, one of the discs being toothed, are associated with an upper portion of the rear wheel. Connecting rods are pivotally connected to the back ends of the levers and are eccentrically-rotatably connected to the discs, a sprocket wheel is connected to the axle of rear wheel, and a driving chain is included in a connection between the toothed disc and the rear-wheel sprocket wheel. Downward pressure on the front end of a lever will cause the connecting rod at the back end of the lever to move upwardly to cause the associated disc and the rigidly-joined disc to rotate, which rotation is transmitted by the chain to the rear-wheel sprocket wheel and thereby to the rear wheel of the vehicle to cause movement of the vehicle over the land.
