An active optical network switch having a switch module, a plurality of uplink modules and a plurality of downlink modules connected to a backplane for connecting the modules and passing signals among them. A CPU module assists in managing the routing of traffic signals by the switch module; said modules and backplane are enclosed in an environmentally hardened housing. Six downlink modules may include four downlink ports each, for connecting the switch to twenty-four subscribers. Multiple switches may be daisy-chained together; one being a master and the remainder being slaves, to increase the number of subscribers that are served by an uplink fiber/pair. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing may aggregate traffic signals between many subscribers and a CO/head end along a single backhaul fiber. Switch software may provide 'network edge' functions including traffic shaping, policing, filtering and aggregation, and address control.

An apparatus and method of maintaining state information for a network device changing from a first channel (in communication with a first base unit) to a second channel (in communication with a second base unit) communicates with at least one of the first base unit and an intermediate network device to ascertain the state information. Once the state information is ascertained, it is applied to the communication of the network device with the second base unit. Both the first and second base units are independently operable network devices in a data transmission network.

A method, apparatus, and system for providing dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) tagging for employing a DHCP server as a non-volatile repository. In one embodiment, the method includes tagging one or more messages from a client computer to the DHCP server with a media access control (MAC) address of a cable modem that is attached to the client computer for storing the MAC address as part of a lease record in the DHCP server. The method further includes receiving a request for the MAC address of the cable modem based on the Internet protocol (IP) address of the client computer from a remote device for transmitting packets to the client computer, obtaining the MAC address of the cable modem corresponding to the IP address of the client computer from the DHCP server, and transmitting the MAC address to the remote device. Consequently, the client computer's traffic through the remote device is directed to the client computer's cable modem.

Method and apparatus for providing dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) tagging

A method and apparatus for initialization and operation of cable modems comprising initializing the cable modems over management channels and transferring the cable modems to a data channel for operation. Initialization over a management channel overcomes certain prior art constraints associated with initialization over the data channel.
