A vascular closure device comprised of a sheath-delivered cincture or noose-like device or knot comprised of suture, wire, or other suitable materials, that is placed on the external surface of a puncture wound, and closed. The vascular closure cincture is delivered by a sheath, and after closing is left resident on the external surface of a tissue puncture wound.

Vascular closure methods and apparatuses

A tissue closure device including a tissue eversion apparatus, and a first and a second, redundant closure element that are placed on the external surface of a tissue puncture wound to enhance the efficacy of closure. The first closure element and the second closure element are left resident on the external surface of or in proximity to the tissue puncture wound in order to provide redundancy of closure.

Redundant tissue closure methods and apparatuses

Tissue eversion apparatuses and methods suitable for use, as examples, with vascular closure devices. The tissue eversion apparatuses comprise a tissue engaging element, disposed within a delivery sheath. The delivery sheath protects the tissue engaging element and the surrounding tissue during use. The tissue engaging element can extend from the sheath and engage the tissue near an aperture in a tissue wall. Motion of the tissue engaging element away from the tissue can urge the tissue wall near the aperture to evert from the tissue wall, allowing, as examples, aperture closure apparatuses and methods to be conveniently employed.

Vascular opening edge eversion methods and apparatuses

A vascular closure device comprising a retrievable sheath-delivered contractible, clip device with structural radial or terminal members with terminal and non-terminal hooks that engage the vessel wall. Unlike other vascular closure clips, this device is delivered on the outside rather than the inside of sheath. Closure of the tissue opening can be effected by the feet of the clip engaging the puncture, aperture, or wound edges and memory characteristics of the device cause a contraction of the members, bringing the members into apposition and the wound edges together, permitting immediate vascular closure and healing of the blood vessel. The device can be delivered and recovered by an intravascular sheath.

A vascular closure device comprised of a sheath-delivered expandable, umbrella-like device with structural radial members with terminal and non-terminal hooks that engage the vessel wall. Unlike other vascular closure umbrella-type devices that effect closure by opening of the umbrella to cover an opening, the present invention effects closure of the aperture with closure of the umbrella. The closure can be maintained by a retainer lock that slides down the members, causing contraction, bringing the members into a compressed configuration (e.g., a parallel orientation of linear members) and the wound edges together, permitting immediate vascular closure and healing of the blood vessel. The device can be delivered and recovered by an intravascular sheath.

A reciprocating syringe that can be used in connection with existing syringe barrels and fittings. Some embodiments comprise a frame, adapted to retain two existing syringe barrels. The frame can accommodate fittings on one or both barrels. The invention also provides a plunger complex, comprising two plungers, each adapted for use with one of the syringe barrels. The two plungers are coupled such that pushing of each plunger into its barrel causes the other plunger to pull outwards relative to its barrel. The two plungers can be coupled by a flexible line attached to one plunger, routed from the plunger out of the corresponding barrel into the other barrel, and attached to the other plunger. The invention contemplates various frame configurations to accommodate desired line and pulley performance characteristics. Other embodiments comprise a frame adapted to retain an existing syringe barrel, and an auxiliary actuator mounted with the frame. Such an actuator can provide a syringe-like plunger operation, or can comprise other manipulable structures. The auxiliary actuator can be coupled to a plunger adapted for use with the syringe barrel, such that pushing the plunger into the barrel causes the actuator to move in a reversible manner, and moving the actuator in the reverse manner causes the plunger to pull outwards relative to its barrel. The invention also comprises various materials, methods of making, geometries and arrangements of parts, and accommodation of various specific existing syringe designs and applications.

Reciprocating procedure syringes

The present invention provides a syringe device comprising: a first syringe comprising: a first syringe barrel including a first opening at a distal end thereof through which fluid may be forced or aspirated; and a first syringe plunger sliding within the first syringe barrel for forcing fluid through the first syringe barrel opening, the first syringe plunger including a stopper at a distal end thereof which sealingly and slidably engages the first syringe barrel; a reciprocating member which moves along a track parallel to the axial direction of the first syringe; and a reciprocating device connecting the first syringe plunger to the reciprocating member so that when one member of the group consisting of the first syringe plunger and the reciprocating member moves distally, the other member of the group is forced to move proximally. The present invention also provides a syringe device where one member of the group consisting of the first syringe plunger and the reciprocating member moves proximally, the other member of the group is forced to move distally.

Reciprocating syringes

The present invention provides methods for determining brain functioning in an individual by measuring the amount of either N-acetylaspartate or choline in an individual's brain. The present invention also provides methods for determining a change in an individual's brain functioning due to a change in the concentration of N-acetylaspartate or choline in the individual's brain.

Biochemical markers of brain function

The present invention provides a method for determining whether an individual has a central nervous system disease or injury comprising: obtaining a T measurement for at least one brain tissue sample from an individual; determining if the T measurement indicates the presence of a central nervous system disease or injury in the individual. The present invention also provides a method for determining whether an individual has a central nervous system disease or injury comprising: obtaining a first T measurement using an MRI technique for a brain tissue sample from an individual at a first time; obtaining a second T measurement using an MRI technique for the brain tissue sample from the individual at a second time; and comparing the second T measurement to the first T measurement. In addition, the present invention provides a method for determining the effectiveness of a treatment for a central nervous system disease or injury comprising: obtaining a first T measurement using an MRI technique for a brain tissue sample from an individual at a first time; administering a first treatment to an individual; obtaining a second T measurement using the MRI technique for the brain tissue sample from the individual after administering the first treatment; and comparing the second T measurement to the first T measurement.

Method for determining activity in the central nervous system

Electrochemical heat engines produce electrochemical work, and mechanical motion is limited to valve and switching actions as the heat-to-work cycles are performed. The electrochemical cells of said heat engines use molten or solid electrolytes at high temperatures. One or more reactions in the cycle will generate a gas at high temperature which can be condensed at a lower temperature with later return of the condensate to electrochemical cells. Sodium, potassium, and cesium are used as the working gases for high temperature cells (above 600 K) with halogen gases or volatile halides being used at lower temperature. Carbonates and halides are used as molten electrolytes and the solid electrolyte in these melts can also be used as a cell separator.
