A high pressure roller press for interparticle crushing and particularly a bearing support for one of the rolls having force means for the bearing housings urging the roll to obtain high pressure capable of interparticle crushing in the nip and a support bearing for one end of the roll having radial arms extending above and below the nip and guided in a slide permitting movement toward or away from the nip with a stepped bearing at one end of the roll with one bearing being a thrust bearing preventing axial movement and the other end of the roll being supported in a bearing permitting axial movement of the roll end. A rubber pad is located between each bearing and a force applying piston to allow tilting of the bearing and a frusto-conical link permits the pad to be larger than the piston.

A two roll crusher including a pair of parallel rollers forming a crushing nip therebetween with gearings at the ends of the rollers and a plate connected to each of the gearings for absorbing reaction moments, torsion rods extending parallel to the plates with spaced arms of unequal length and links connecting the arms to the plates so that the reaction moments of the plate is transmitted to twist the torsion rods with the rods designed to support the weight of the gearing of the rollers.

A two roller machine, and more particularly a roll type crusher, which comprises two oppositely driven rollers rotatably seated in a housing and having gearings connected to the drive journals of the rollers, the gearings being flexibly connected to one another by torque supports for absorbing the reaction moments and said torque supports being formed as two-armed lever plates and being rigidly joined to the gearing. A considerable simplification of the torque support is inventively achieved in that levers are rotationally arranged at the outer, opposite ends of the lever plates formed as torque supports, said levers being connected to one another by a toggle link.

A worm centrifuge with a rotatable drum and a rotatable screw therein and separate drives with a speed governable clutch between the drives to provide for a start-up by one of the drives, preferably a speed governable drive, and arranged so that the clutch can be released for independent driving of the drum and screw during normal operation.

A worm centrifuge system is disclosed wherein a rotatably supported centrifuge drum is provided together with a conveyor worm rotatably supported within the drum. A drive motor is provided for the drum and a separate drive motor is provided for the worm. A centrifuge drum and conveyor worm are normally operated at different RPMs. The conveyor worm is driven by one of the motors through a planetary gear and a housing of the planetary gear is connected to the centrifuge drum. The other drive motor connects with the housing of the planetary gear by a belt system. A switchable coupling is provided to connect the input of the planetary gear to its housing during start-up and then selectively to disengage the housing from the input of the planetary gear after operating speed is attained and the other drive motor is energized. The maximum energy requirements for each of the drive motors is reduced, thereby reducing cost.

A method and apparatus for smoothing local unevenness from the surface of bar material, such as anode bars, consisting of clamping the bar rigidly against a supporting frame and moving a smoothing device along the bar, said smoothing device maintained in continued contact with the bar by means of rollers pushing against opposed parallel faces of the bar. The rollers allow the smoothing device to move according to the general contour of the bar, so that only local unevenness is removed, and excessive smoothing due to curvature in the overall bar length is eliminated.

An apparatus is disclosed for the determination of particle size distribution of a granular material within a measuring channel. The measuring channel has radiation permeable side walls and a granular material is spread out through the measuring channel by a sifting air current in accordance with grain size. A scanning apparatus is movable external to the measuring channel and includes a frame on which is mounted a radiation transmitter and a radiation receiver lying opposite the transmitter. A measuring beam from the transmitter scans through a measuring zone of the measuring channel. The measuring frame is of closed-loop construction and surrounds the measurement channel. With such construction, the frame is not subject to vibration particularly when reciprocated in order to cause scanning movement of the measuring beam.

In a method of degasification of viscose liquids by means of centrifugation the liquid is brought onto the interior wall of a rotor in the form of a flowing film and divided into a bubble-poor and a bubble-rich portion, the bubble-poor portion being separated from the bubble-rich portion prior to leaving the rotor and withdrawn from the rotor wall by means of at least one pump. In a preferred form of the invention the bubble-rich portion of the liquid is also withdrawn separately from the centrifuge by means of at least one pump and returned for renewed centrifugation.
