Systems and methods provide a magnetic actuator having more than one air gap. After the trip unit is triggered, a first armature is accelerated to quickly close a first air gap and then mate with a second armature. The first and second armature then move toward a core to close a second air gap and reach the final combined armature position, causing a contact to open. A faster reaction time is provided, yet without increasing the number of turns of the trip coil winding, and provides a more efficient actuator.

Magnetic actuator with more than one air gap in series

A terminal covering cap is mounted over the connection terminals of a multi-phase electrical switching device in order to increase the electric strength between the connection terminals of neighbouring phases. The L-shaped terminal covering cap closely abuts on its side facing the insulating housing the marginal region of connection openings leading to the connection terminals, with a negligible air gap. With this barrier, the required increased test voltage between the connection terminals can be withstood. On the side facing away from the insulating housing, the terminal covering cap is provided with ribs, to extend the creep distance on this side of the terminal covering cap. The terminal covering cap formed in this way makes it possible to carry out testing a the prescribed, increased test voltage without enlarging the insulating housing in order to extend the creep distance between the connection terminals of neighbouring phases.

An electrical protection switch, or circuit breaker, includes a movable contact part rotatably seated on a bolt which is secured to a leg of a mount. The other leg of the mount lies against a flange of a coil member which forms a portion of a magnetic release means. Two retaining elements extending parallel to one another and mutually spaced apart project from this flange. The retaining elements accept one leg of the mount therebetween and are provided with resilient tongues which press against the leg of the mount lying against the flange and, thus, press the leg against the flange. Fastening of the mount having the movable contact part to the magnetic release means, or coil member, is performed simply by slipping the mount onto the coil member by a snap-in connection.

Electrical protection switch

There are arranged at a magnetic trigger for a selectively operative switch, a plunger-type armature, a pivotable armature and a tripping device. A plunger of the plunger-type armature acts directly upon a movable contact of a pair of contacts and the plunger-type armature is actuated using a magnetic coil or winding when the current flowing through the magnetic coil at least corresponds to a predetermined threshold current for opening the contacts. A pivotable armature is actuated by the plunger-type armature and redirects the magnetic return flux. The tripping device acts upon a switch lock mechanism and is switched into or out of the magnetic return flux by the plunger-type armature. The degree of overlap between pole shoes of the pivotable armature and of the tripping device is preselectable by an adjusting screw. There is thus realized a current-dependent, selective tripping of the switch lock mechanism.

Magnetic trigger for a selectively operative switch

A protection switch, or a circuit breaker, includes a bimetallic element provided with a heating winding to form a portion of a structural unit insertable into an upper housing part, said structural unit further including a carrier connected to the bimetallic unit and having a connecting terminal extending from the carrier. The structural unit also including a terminal element connected to the heating winding and having an arc runner continuation, as well as carrying a contact piece of the switch contact. Continuations are provided for positioning the structural unit in a housing, the continuations engaging into guide grooves rigidly provided in the housing. The terminal element, in the region of the contact piece, is pressed against the housing stop and the carrier includes a fork-like free end embracing a catch rib of the housing. The bimetallic element is correctly positioned upon insertion of the structural unit into the housing so that readjustment is not necessary.

Protection switch with thermal excess-current release

Each bimetallic element is associated with one phase and is attached with one end thereof to a metallic support mounted at a wall of a housing. Each support comprises two supporting surfaces or faces lying in a plane which extends at right angles to the bending or deflection direction of the free ends of the bimetallic elements. When all the bimetallic elements have the same temperature, the distance of this plane from the bendable ends of the bimetallic elements is the same for all bimetallic elements. The supports are supported at counter surfaces or faces provided at the housing wall via a plate-shaped intermediate layer of the same thickness. The counter surfaces for all supports lie in a common plane extending at a distance, which corresponds to the thickness of the intermediate layer, from the plane defined by the supporting surfaces and in substantial parallelism thereto. By virtue of the design of the supporting surfaces and the counter surfaces there is ensured that the bendable free ends of all the bimetallic elements which act upon a common slider are aligned with respect to each other after the bimetallic elements have been assembled into the housing. Thus no re-adjustment is necessary.
