A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an oil-soluble branched-chain hydrocarbyl-substituted arenesulfonic acid salt, wherein the arenesulfonic moiety has at least one hydrocarbyl substituent which is a highly branched group as defined by having a Chi(0)/Shadow XY ratio greater than about 0.180, exhibits good dynamic frictional performance.

Highly branched sulfonates for drive-line applications

The invention provides a process for preparing a neutral or an overbased detergent, the process by: reacting (a) a pre-prepared suspension comprising (i) a metal base with a mean particle size of 10 micrometers or less; (ii) a surfactant; and (iii) an organic medium in which the metal base is suspended typically by a physical process. An overbased detergent may be formed with a further reaction with acidifying overbasing agent. The invention further provides a lubricant composition containing said neutral and overbased detergent.

Method of preparing an overbased or neutral detergent

An overbased material is prepared in a liquid ester medium which is subject to saponification upon exposure to strong base, by preparing a mixture of an acidic material having at least about 8 carbon atoms in a volatile oleophilic medium which is substantially inert to base; adding to the mixture a stoichiometric excess of a metal base; adding to the mixture a gaseous acidic material under conditions to react with substantially all of the stoichiometric excess of the metal base; and adding the liquid ester medium to the resulting material.

A metal overbased composition is disclosed that comprises (A) at least one natural oil comprising an animal oil or vegetable oil comprising a triglyceride of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups containing from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms and (B) a metal base oxide (MO), hydroxide (MOH) or alkoxide (R.sup.4 OM) wherein the metal comprises an alkali or alkaline earth and R.sup.4 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 1 to about 24 carbon atoms, and wherein the equivalent ratio of (A):(B) is from 0.90-10:1 to form a sponified intermediate, adding 2-11 equivalents of (B) per equivalent of formed saponified intermediate and reacting excess (B) with (C) an acidic gas comprising carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxide. This composition may also be gelled to produce a rheology control agent.

This invention describes highly reactive polymers obtained from lower monomers. The polymers are particularly useful in alkylation reactions.

A magnesium containing overbasing process and the product obtained therefrom are described herein. Water and a phenol are used in the process.

Magnesium overbasing process

A process is disclosed for overbasing a substrate comprising mixing a composition comprising said substrate, water, a phenol containing up to three aliphatic carbon atoms, a source of magnesium and a carbonating agent, under reaction conditions to form a magnesium overbased substrate, said water being retained in said composition throughout the overbasing reaction, the weight ratio of the water to magnesium being about 10:1 to about 1:5. A magnesium overbased substrate made by the foregoing process is disclosed. Concentrates and lubricating compositions containing the foregoing magnesium overbased substrate are also disclosed.

A process for preparing a lower alkene polymer from a lower alkene feedstream, including the steps of: (A) contacting the lower alkene monomer with a catalyst system comprising boron trifluoride and at least one acid selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid, phosphoric acids and strong acid resins and (B) polymerizing the lower alkene monomer in the presence of the catalyst system at a temperature of about -3.degree. C. to about -30.degree. C. thereby obtaining a lower alkene polymer having a molecular weight of about 250 to about 500.

The invention describes a process for overbasing a substrate comprising mixing the substrate, water, a phenol, a source of magnesium and a carbonating agent, wherein the water is retained throughout the overbasing reaction and provided further that the weight ratio of the water to the magnesium is in a 10:1 to 1:5 weight ratio, thereby obtaining a magnesium overbased substrate.
