In one embodiment, we disclose hardened olefin waxes and processes for preparing them. In another embodiment, we disclose oxidized olefin waxes having low viscosity and processes for preparing them. The waxes are suitable for use as polishes, coatings, or inks, among other uses. For example, a hardened olefin wax composition produced from a feedstock olefin wax composition by contacting the feedstock olefin wax composition with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature greater than a melting point of the feedstock olefin wax composition, the hardened olefin wax composition having: a needle penetration value at 25&#xb0; C. at least 5 percent less than a needle penetration value at 25&#xb0; C. of the feedstock olefin wax composition; a a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of up to about 200% greater than the kinematic viscosity of the feedstock olefin wax composition; and a saponification number less than 5 mg KOH/g hardened olefin wax composition.

Olefin waxes having improved hardness or viscosity

A process to oxidize an olefin wax, comprising: contacting a feedstock olefin wax composition with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature greater than a melting point of the feedstock olefin wax composition melting point, to prepare an oxidized olefin wax composition wherein the oxidized olefin wax composition has an acid number greater than 1 mg KOH/g oxidized olefin wax composition and a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. less than 70 cSt.

In one embodiment, we disclose hardened olefin waxes and processes for preparing them. In another embodiment, we disclose oxidized olefin waxes having low viscosity and processes for preparing them. The waxes are suitable for use as polishes, coatings, or inks, among other uses.

A method of modifying the activity of a solid acid catalyst by contact with a carboxylic acid is presented. The modified catalyst is exposed to a feed mixture including olefins in a reaction zone, and an effluent including an isomerized olefin product is withdrawn from the reaction zone. The isomerized olefin product includes a more random distribution of internal olefins than the olefins of the feed mixture. The feed mixture and the isomerized olefin product include linear olefins. The isomerization results in no more than about 10 weight percent additional branched, compared to the olefins of the feed mixture, among the olefins of the isomerized olefin product. The isomerized olefin product includes no more than about 20 weight percent dimer. The olefin monomers of the feed mixture and the isomerized olefin product include from about 4 to about 30 carbon atoms. The effluent includes no more than about 20 weight percent ester. The solid acid catalyst may be an acidic ion exchange resin. The feed mixture may include olefins, esters, and carboxylic acid.
