A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil of lubricating viscosity, calcium, nitrogen, molybdenum and boron. The weight ratio of Ca:N (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 1.3 to less than 3.0, the weight ratio of Ca:Mo (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 6.7 to less than 56.3, and the weight ratio of Ca:B (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 5.0 to less than 9.8. The lubricating oil composition does not contain added magnesium from a magnesium-containing detergent. The lubricating oil composition is resistant to deposit formation in the boosted internal combustion engine, as shown by its ability to ensure a TCO Temperature Increase of less than 9.0% as measured using the 2015 version of the General Motors dexos1&#xae; Turbocharger Coking Test.

Lubricants for use in boosted engines

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes a major amount of a base oil, one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents having a total base number of greater than 225 mg KOH/gram, to provide greater than 900 ppm by weight to less than 2400 ppm by weight of calcium to the lubricating oil composition, and a low speed pre-ignition reducing amount of one or more titanium-containing compounds to provide from 10 ppm to 3000 ppm titanium and/or one or more tungsten-containing compounds to provide from 125 ppm to 3000 ppm tungsten, all based on the total weight of the lubricating composition. The low speed pre-ignition events in the boosted internal combustion engine may be reduced relative to a number of low speed pre-ignition events in the same engine lubricated with the same lubricating oil without the titanium- and/or tungsten-containing additive.

Lubricants with titanium and/or tungsten and their use for improving low speed pre-ignition

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil, one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents having a TBN greater than 225 mg KOH/g and one or more magnesium-containing detergents. A total amount of calcium from the one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents is from 900 ppm to less than 2400 ppm by weight, and a total amount of magnesium from the one or more magnesium-containing detergents is from 50 ppm to 500 ppm by weight, both based on a total weight of the lubricating oil composition. The lubricating oil composition and the method of using it are effective to reduce low speed pre-ignition events in a boosted internal combustion engine lubricated with the lubricating oil composition.

Lubricants with magnesium and their use for improving low speed pre-ignition

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition is formulated to be resistant to turbocharger deposit formation in the boosted internal combustion engine, as shown by its ability to ensure a TCO Temperature Increase of less than 9.0% as measured using the 2015 version of the General Motors Dexos1&#xae; Turbocharger Coking Test. The lubricating oil composition may also have a low NOACK volatility, as measured by the method of ASTM D-5800 at 250&#xb0; C.

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil, an overbased detergent having a TBN greater than 225 mg KOH/g and a low-based/neutral detergent having a TBN up to 175 mg KOH/g. A total amount of calcium from the overbased and low-based/neutral detergent is greater than 1100 ppm to less than 2400 ppm by weight based on a total weight of the lubricating oil composition. The lubricating oil composition and method may be effective to reduce low-speed pre-ignition events in a boosted internal combustion engine lubricated with the lubricating oil composition relative to commercially available lubricating oil compositions.

Lubricants with calcium-containing detergent and their use for improving low speed pre-ignition

A method for reducing timing chain stretch in an engine comprising a step of lubricating said timing chain with a lubricating oil composition that includes a major amount of a base oil; and a minor amount of an additive package including (a) at least one overbased calcium detergent, (b) at least one borated dispersant, (c) a metal dialkyl dithiophosphate, and (d) at least one molybdenum compound. The lubricating oil composition has a TBN value of at least 7.5 mg KOH/g of the lubricating oil composition, at least 80 ppm of molybdenum, based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition, a weight ratio of total calcium in the lubricating oil composition to total molybdenum in the lubricating oil composition of less than 8.4; and a weight ratio of nitrogen from the dispersant in the lubricating composition to total boron in the lubricating oil composition of from 2.6 to 3.0.

Lubricant compositions for reducing timing chain stretch

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition has not more than 150 ppm sodium and includes a major amount of a base oil and an additive composition that includes one or more overbased calcium-containing detergents having a total base number of greater than 225 mg KOH/gram, in an amount sufficient to provide greater than 1100 ppm by weight to less than 2400 ppm by weight of calcium to the lubricating oil composition, and one or more molybdenum-containing compounds in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 80 ppm by weight molybdenum to the lubricating oil composition, all based on the total weight of the lubricating composition. The oil and method may reduce low-speed pre-ignition events in the boosted internal combustion engine relative to a number of low-speed pre-ignition events in the same engine lubricated with a reference lubricating oil.

Lubricants with molybdenum and their use for improving low speed pre-ignition

A lubricating oil composition and method of for providing an acceptable number of low-speed pre-ignition events in a boosted internal combustion engine using the lubricating oil composition. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil of lubricating viscosity, and an additive composition that includes an overbased calcium-containing detergent having a TBN greater than 225 mg KOH/g, and one or more zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate compounds are derived from a molar ratio of secondary alcohol to primary alcohol of 20:100 to about 100:0 and have an average total carbon content of greater than 10 carbon atoms per mole of phosphorous. The lubricating oil compositions contains the overbased calcium-containing detergent in an amount to provide greater than 900 ppm to less than 2400 ppm by weight calcium, and at least 0.01 wt. % of the zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, both amounts based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition.

Lubricants with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate and their use in boosted internal combustion engines

A lubricant composition, lubricant concentrate and method for reducing engine deposits. The composition and method include a base oil of lubricating viscosity; an organo-molybdenum compound; a deposition reducing amount of a reaction product of an alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid compound selected from the group consisting of alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acids, alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, and mixtures thereof, and a basic salt of aminoguanidine, in an amount sufficient to provide a product rich in alkyl bis-3-amino-1,2,4-triazole; and optionally a phenate detergent. The lubricant composition and method provide engine deposits that are less than an amount of engine deposits in the absence of component (c) and/or optional component (d).

Lubricating method and composition for reducing engine deposits

A lubricant additive composition, a method for reducing engine deposit formation and a method for improving emulsion stability of a lubricant composition. The lubricant additive composition includes (a) an organomolybdenum compound contributing from about 20 to no greater than 300 ppm by weight molybdenum to the lubricant composition based on a total weight of the lubricant composition containing the additive composition; (b) a boronated hydrocarbyl substituted succinimide dispersant; and (c) a reaction product of (i) a hydrocarbyl-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, (ii) a polyamine, (iii) a dicarboxyl-containing fused aromatic compound, and (iv) a non-aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. The hydocarbyl group of the hydrocarbyl-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride has a number average molecular weight of greater than 1800 Daltons as determined by gel permeation chromatography. A weight ratio of (b) to (c) ranges from about 1:1 to about 4:1.

Lubricating oil composition and additive therefor having improved piston deposit control and emulsion stability

The embodiments described herein relate to particular formulations and methods that provide reduced engine deposits. The lubricant composition includes a base oil having a NOACK volatility of from about 5 to about 15 and a zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition. The zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition has at least about 65 mole percent of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate compounds derived from all primary alcohols, wherein the zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition has greater than about 40 mole percent zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate compounds having alkoxy moieties derived from alcohols having four carbon atoms.

Lubricant formulations and methods

There is disclosed a lubricating composition comprising a first base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. ranging from about 3.5 cSt to about 6 cSt; and a second high viscosity base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. ranging from about 6 cSt to about 17 cSt.

Lubricating composition

A lubricated surface, a method for reducing wear between moving parts, and lubricants, and lubricant additive concentrates containing a wear reducing agent. The lubricated surface contains a base oil of lubricating viscosity, a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound, a metal-free friction modifier and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble magnesium compound effective to provide a reduction in surface wear greater than a reduction surface wear for a lubricant composition devoid of the titanium compound, metal-free friction modifier, and magnesium compound. The lubricant composition contains no more than about 800 ppm phosphorus and is devoid of calcium detergents and organic molybdenum compound.

Additives and lubricant formulations for improved antiwear properties

A fully formulated lubricating oil, lubricated surface, and lubricant additive concentrates for lubricants providing reduced sludge formation. The fully formulated lubricating oil composition has therein at least one succinimide dispersant derived from a polyalkylene compound having from about 50 to about 85% vinylidene double bonds in the compound, a metal containing detergent, at least one wear reducing agent, at least one antioxidant, and a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound as a friction modifier. The lubricating oil composition is also substantially free of molybdenum compounds.

Titanium-containing lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition comprising a) an oil of lubricating viscosity having a viscosity index of at least about 95; b) at least one calcium detergent; c) at least one oil soluble titanium compound; d) at least one friction modifier; and e) at least one metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound. The composition has a Noack volatility of about 15 wt. % or less, and contains from about 0.05 to about 0.6 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent, titanium metal in an amount of at least about 10 ppm up to about 1500 ppm titanium from the titanium compound, and phosphorus from the metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. %.
