A method for communicating with a legacy terminal supporting a legacy air interface and a new terminal supporting a next generation air interface including: assigning a same carrier to the legacy terminal and the new terminal; receiving a terminal identifier and an optional payload for transmission at a MAC/RLC layer; determining if the terminal identifier is associated with the legacy terminal or the new terminal; composing, based on the determining, a burst header; formatting, a burst including the burst header and the optional payload; and transmitting the burst. In the method, the burst header is set to one of the one or more valid burst headers when the burst is associated with the legacy terminal, and the burst header is set to one of the one or more undefined burst headers when the burst is associated with the new terminal.

Backward compatible physical layer and signaling for satellite communication

A system and method for communicating with an Internet Of Things (IoT) device via a satellite link. The method includes assigning a transmission mode to a physical channel, where the physical channel supports multiple timeslot durations and the transmission mode is selected from a single user (SU) or a multi-user (MU); selecting a timeslot duration from the multiple durations for a payload; obtaining, when the transmission mode is SU, a timeslot grant for use of the physical channel for the timeslot duration; and transmitting a burst including the payload, where the burst is transmitted synchronized with the timeslot grant when the transmission mode is SU and the burst is transmitted without synchronization when the transmission mode is MU.

Internet-of things narrowband communications with mobile satellite

A receiver and a method for receiving a radio communication is disclosed. The method includes receiving a burst encoded with a robust modulation coding scheme (MCS) as RX signals; generating, for each of the RX signals, a burst SNR, soft decision symbols and a packet; weighing, each of soft decision symbols with a respective burst SNR, to calculate soft combined symbols that are used to generate a Maximal-Ratio Combining (MRC) packet; and selecting, from the packets and the MRC packet, a CRC passed packet as an output. An adaptive dual burst transmitter is disclosed.

The present teachings disclose implementations of a UE and a method for providing a Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, the method including: receiving an NB-IoT downlink over a forward link; obtaining MAC configuration parameters, a transmit-timing offset and a transmit-frequency offset; pre-adjusting, to align with a return link timing and a return link frequency, a transmit-timing with the transmit-timing offset and a transmit-frequency with the transmit-frequency offset; requesting, based on the MAC configuration parameters and after the pre-adjusting, a connection with a Random-Access Preamble (RAR) over an NB-IoT uplink via the return link; and establishing the connection upon receiving a Random-Access Response (RAR), where a Round Trip-Time (RTT) from a transmitting antenna to a receiving antenna is greater than 67 microseconds (us), and both the NB-IoT downlink and the NB-IoT uplink use a mostly unchanged NB-IoT standard waveform. The NB-IoT service may be relayed by a satellite, for example, a geosynchronous earth orbit satellite. Further corrections to the timing and frequency may be performed on the connection. A cell or beam selection may be based on an NB-IoT system type, including NB-IoT over satellite, indicated in a Master Information Block.
