A method of feeding a pulverulent batch material into a furnace in the manufacture of glass. The pulverulent batch material is fed from a first bulk batch feeder at a first batch feed rate, and from a second trim batch feeder at a second trim batch feed rate. The trim batch feed rate is equal to or less than 10% of the total batch feed rate. The use of trim electrodes and trim burners is also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for controlling the level of a molten material in a glass manufacturing system

Feed materials are melted in a first vessel to form a glass melt at a first temperature T, the glass melt containing at least one fining agent. The molten glass is next cooled to a second temperature Tless than Tin a second vessel wherein an oxygen-comprising gas is not actively added (e.g. bubbled) into the melt during the duration of the time the melt is at T. The molten glass is thereafter heated to a third temperature Tgreater than Tand subsequently formed into a glass article.

Method of reducing gaseous inclusions in a glass making process

A method of forming a glass melt including heating a glass feed material in a first melting furnace to form a glass melt, flowing the glass melt into a second melting furnace through a refractory metal connecting tube, and further heating the glass melt in the second melting furnace. The refractory metal connecting tube is heated to prevent the molten glass from excessive cooling, and to ensure that the glass melt entering the second melting furnace is equal to or greater than the temperature of the glass melt in the second melting furnace. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Method of forming a glass melt

The invention includes methods of making a fluorine doped soot particle. One method of the invention includes the steps of (1) delivering a silicon containing precursor to a first opening in a burner face; (2) delivering a source of oxygen to a second opening, wherein the second opening is spaced apart from the first opening such that the silicon precursor and oxygen source react to form a soot particle having a surface area of more than about 20 m/g; and (3) delivering a fluorine precursor to a third opening, said third opening is spaced apart from the first opening. A second method of the invention includes the steps of (A) delivering a silicon containing precursor to a first opening in a burner face; (B) delivering a fluorine precursor to a second opening, wherein said second opening is spaced apart from said first opening; and (C) delivering a fuel to a third opening, said third opening is spaced apart from said first opening.

Deposition of high fluorine content silica soot

The invention includes a method of incorporating fluorine into a preform that may be used to produce an optical article. A method that may be used to practice the invention includes a method of making an optical fiber preform. The method includes reacting a fluorine containing precursor in a flame of a combustion burner without forming a soot, thereby forming a fluorine doping atmosphere. A further method that may be practiced to practice the invention includes the step reacting at least a fluorine containing precursor in a flame of a combustion burner, wherein the precursors reacted in the flame are substantially devoid of the element of silicon, thereby forming a fluorine containing atmosphere for the doping of a soot preform. An additional method that may be used to practice the invention includes the step of reacting at least one precursor in the flame of a combustion burner, wherein said precursors comprise at least one fluorine containing compound and the precursors are substantially free of any silicon containing compound, and the additional step of directing a reaction product of said reacting step toward a soot preform.

An implement mounting assembly for attachment to a horizontal bar of a vehicle including a rigid mounting bracket, the mounting bracket having a U-shaped cross-section, the mounting bracket having a first generally rectangular front face and a second generally rectangular rear face, both of the faces having holes therein for receipt of bolts for connecting the bracket to a weight bar of a vehicle, and a hollow rigid receiver rigidly connected to the bracket, the receiver preferably being generally rectangular in cross-section and being oriented vertically upward when the bracket is connected to the weight bar; the rear face of the bracket preferably having a generally rectangular slot therein for placement over a supporting member which may be connected to the weight bar. Preferably the receiver has a collar located around the outside of the upper end thereof for providing additional strength to the upper end of the receiver.
