In a method for displaying menus on a storage automation library, a user's input to the library is processed and, in response thereto, either 1) a menu derived from a local menu structure is displayed, or 2) a remote menu mode is activated. Between activation and deactivation of the remote menu mode, the library waits for a remote host to return remote menu data. A method by which a remote host retrieves the status of such an indicator, and apparatus for implementing these and other related methods, are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for providing menu data to a storage automation library

An apparatus to test whether a first network is misconnected to a second network includes an interface to the first network, and a controller coupled to the interface to send a first message to the first network, the first message to request configuration information of the apparatus. The controller receives a second message from a configuration server coupled to the second network, the second message being responsive to the first message. The controller indicates misconnection of the first network to the second network in response to receiving the second message.

A system for backing up data includes a data-directing device configured to receive data to be backed up, a first backup storage device that is communicatively coupled to the data-directing device and that is configured to store the received data, a data-caching device that is coupled to the data-directing device and that is configured to store the received data, a switch that is configured to communicatively couple the data-directing device to a second backup storage device responsive to a backup operation failure, wherein data stored in the data-caching device is transferred to the second backup storage device via the data-directing device responsive to the backup operation failure.

Systems and methods for backing up data

A virtual electronic data library system has a plurality of storage elements. Each storage element is adapted to store a medium of a plurality of media. Preferably, a plurality of subsets of the media each have one format of a plurality of formats. A plurality of input/output elements are preferably adapted to receive and read the media stored in the storage elements. Each of the input/output elements is capable of operatively receiving media having at least one of the formats. A library controller has firmware wherein the subsets of the media are each assigned a logical unit number for use by the controller to partition the library. At least one transport is operable to remove the media from the storage elements and operatively deploy the media for use by one of the input/output elements. The transport deploys the media in an input/output element according to the logical unit numbers.

The present disclosure relates to a redundant back up device. Through use of the device, a method for backing up information can be performed that comprises the steps of transmitting data to be backed up to a primary backup device and to the redundant backup device, writing the transmitted data to a writing medium contained within a writing device of the primary backup device, and simultaneous to the step of writing the transmitted data to the writing medium of the primary backup device, caching the transmitted data in a data storage device of the redundant backup device. By caching the transmitted data in this manner, the data can be rewritten to the writing medium should a failure occur.

A split compound gear assembly for a drive loader of the type having an overcentering mechanism with a drive loader actuator shaft. The split compound gear assembly may comprise a drive gear operably connected to a motor, and a first compound gear engaging the drive gear. The assembly also comprises a split compound gear engaging the first compound gear which allows the overcentering mechanism to quickly snap closed. The split compound gear includes an inner member including an inner, smaller gear which is freely rotatable within an outer member including an outer, larger gear. The split compound gear assembly may also include a sector gear which engages the inner gear of the split compound gear and rotates the drive loader actuator shaft.
