A homoleptic polynitrogen ion and salts thereof are described as being highly exothermic in nature and thus give rise to compounds useful for propulsion and explosive applications, among others. Also described are processes for the macroscopic production of compounds containing homoleptic polynitrogen.

Pentanitrogen(1&plus;)cation and salt containing the same

Tetramethylammonium azide, N(CH.sub.3).sub.4 N.sub.3, is prepared by a new process per the present invention. In the prior art, preparation of such azide was by use of shock-sensitive starting materials, i.e. AgN.sub.3 and HN.sub.3. The method of the present invention provides a new method for making such azide at high purity, at room temperature, without the use of shock-sensitive materials.

NF.sub.3 -F.sub.2 Gas generator compositions

An improved NF.sub.4.sup.+ composition for solid propellant NF.sub.3 -F.sub.2 gas generators and high detonation pressure explosives is described which combines high oxidizer content with good thermal stability. The novel composition has the formula (NF.sub.4).sub.2 MnF.sub.6, and a process for its production is disclosed.

The peroxonium salts, H.sub.3 O.sub.2.sup.+ Sb.sub.2 F.sub.11.sup.-, H.sub.3 O.sub.2.sup.+ SbF.sub.6.sup.- and H.sub.3 O.sub.2.sup.+ AsF.sub.6.sup.-, are prepared by protonation of H.sub.2 O.sub.2 in anhydrous HF solutions of the corresponding Lewis acids. The salts decompose producing the corresponding H.sub.3 O.sup.+ salts and O.sub.2 in the temperature range of from 20.degree. to 50.degree. C. and thus are useful as oxidizers in situations where the production of oxygen in the 20.degree.-50.degree. C. temperature range is desirable. The salts also provide a convenient means for storing H.sub.2 O.sub.2 in a solid form.
