The present invention relates to aqueous compositions comprising component (A) which comprises at least one water-soluble component comprising at least one functional group that undergoes a crosslinking reaction, preferably upon drying and/or heating; component (B) which comprises at least one film-forming material, preferably a latex material; and component (C) which comprises at least one component that provides at least one of moisture and/or water barrier properties and/or vapor barrier properties greater than that provided by the combination of components (A) and (B) alone.

The present invention relates to aqueous compositions comprising component (A) which comprises at least one water-soluble component comprising at least one functional group that undergoes a crosslinking reaction, preferably upon drying and/or heating; and component (B) which comprises at least one film-forming material. In particular the composition is a coating composition comprises: (A) at least one polyamidoamine-epihalohydrin resin; and (B) at least one material selected from flexibilizing materials, crosslink inhibiters and combinations thereof in an amount sufficient to impart a cuttability value of less than about 15 to a substrate coated with the coating composition. Component (B) is preferably at least one polymer comprising repeating units derived from an alkyl halide having at least one double bond and an alkene, such as ethylene vinyl chloride. Coated substrates such as coated building units, such as ceiling tiles and wall boards, as well as methods of producing such coated substrates are also provided.

Resin compositions having high solids contents

The invention relates to resin systems useful for imparting dry-strength to paper without substantially increasing the paper's wet-strength wherein the resin system comprises a cationic component and an anionic component. The invention also relates to the process for incorporating these resin systems into paper and the paper produced containing the resin systems.

A process for making paper with increased wet and dry strength by incorporating into the pulp suspension an ionic thermosettable resin which is the reaction product of dialdehyde and epihalohydrin, or epihalohydrin equivalent, with a copolymer containing monomer units derived by polymerization of monomers comprising acrylamide or alkyl-substituted acrylamide and diallylamine or an acid salt thereof. The paper has wet and dry strength greater than that of paper not containing the resin and has a higher repulpability index than wet strength paper that is essentially the same but contains conventional polyazetidinium ion containing wet strength resin instead of the ionic thermosettable resin.

An ionic thermosettable resin useful for imparting wet and dry strength to paper is made by: (a) providing a copolymer comprising monomer units derived by copolymerization of acrylamide or alkyl-substituted acrylamide and diallylamine or an acid salt thereof; and (b) reacting the copolymer with epihalohydrin or epihalohydrin equivalent and dialdehyde. Paper products made using the resin are more easily repulped than paper products made with conventional wet strength resins.

Disclosed is an improvement in a method of making a water-soluble epichlorohydrin resin involving reacting epichlorohydrin with a polyaminoamide. The improvement involves preparing the polyaminoamide in the presence of an acid catalyst (low temperature condensation) followed by reaction with epichlorohydrin.
