The invention pertains to flame retardant flexible polyurethane foams prepared by reacting a polyether polyol, or organic isocyanate, and a blowing agent incorporating (a) melamine in an amount ranging from about 30 weight percent to about 55 weight percent and an effective amount of (b) another flame retardant.

The subject invention relates to compositions prepared by oxyalkylation of N-(2-hydroxyalkyl)-aniline as the initiator compound with one or more alkylene oxides at elevated temperatures and in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The resulting compositions have an unsymmetric structure with two functional groups, a secondary amino nitrogen and a hydroxyl group. The initiator compound reacts completely and removal of any residual initiator from the polyol is not required. When the subject invention polyol composition is reacted with an isocyanate, both urea and urethane groups form. The subject polyols may be used in the preparation of polyurethane products as well as nonionic and ionic surfactants.

An oxyalkylated product useful for making polyurethane foams is prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with a heated mixture of a phenol and a non-phenolic active hydrogen compound, at least one of which can be halogenated, in the presence of a catalyst complex of a phenol and an iron or aluminum substance. An oxyalkylated, halogenated product useful in making polyurethane foams is prepared by reacting an epoxide compound with a halogenated aromatic hydroxyl-containing compound (phenol) which is either a monohydroxy or polyhydroxy compound. Said aromatic hydroxyl compound has a hydroxy group attached directly to the aromatic nucleus. By the process of the invention, hydroxyalkylation occurs in the presence of a catalyst selectively active in the predominant oxyalkylation of aromatic hydroxyl groups, said catalyst selected from the group consisting of zinc, magnesium and a zinc or magnesium salt as defined. The reaction mixture can include an aliphatic hydroxyl-containing compound, a neutral phosphorus compound, and aliphatic or aromatic anhydrides or mixtures thereof to enhance the flame-retardant properties of the oxyalkylated product.
