A fast, flexible, and affordable structural building solution is disclosed. Current construction methodologies are prohibitively costly, slow, and wasteful. This construction method provides responsive and adaptive short to long term structural solutions. A reconfigurable flat packed modular structure can be shipped, assembled, and move-in ready in a fraction of the time of standard structural solutions. This system is easy to assemble and reusable with decreased maintenance costs and utilizes standardized shipping infrastructure. The structural elements are designed to build flexible residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. Component standardization reduces construction and maintenance cost over traditional building methods. The ease of construction reduces the learning curve for the assembly process. Embedded utilities in the components further minimize construction time. The modular nature of the design system allows for rapid assembly, disassembly, and redeployment as needed. Components are specifically built to ship using standard shipping containers for optimal organization of components and transportation.

Innovation in modular structures

A light valve for regulating light through an optical fiber system includes a scattering panel interposed between first and second light guides. A reflecting surface directs the light from the output end of the first light guide toward the input end of the second light guide, thereby eliminating losses associated with known arrangements. Use of a reflecting surface advantageously provides multiple passes through the scattering panel to increase the contrast ratio between on and off states of the system, if desired.

Light valves for light guides using scattering materials

A liquid crystal display (LCD) is provided with a source of backlighting which augments reflected incident light to provide increased contrast. A liquid crystal cell which does not contain dye, but becomes clear when a field is applied, is sandwiched in back of a liquid crystal cell with a dye and electrically connected so that when the front liquid crystal cell is turned ON to make selected portions of it transparent, the back liquid crystal cell is OFF so that corresponding portions of it are highly reflecting. No voltage is allowed to be applied across nonselected portions of the front liquid crystal and a voltage is applied across corresponding nonselected portions of the back liquid crystal making the nonselected portions of the back liquid crystal clear, producing a display of high contrast. Sandwiched to the rear of the back liquid crystal cell is a clear plastic wedge which is edge lighted. The edge lighted wedge only appears bright in the areas where the voltage on the back liquid crystal cell is OFF or not applied thereto.

A light coupling arrangement for efficiently coupling a light source to a light distribution arrangement includes a solid optical coupling device constructed of a light transmissive material and configured in an essentially planar manner such that the length and width dimensions are significantly greater than the depth dimension. An aperture is formed on at least one side along the equatorial surface of the optical coupling device and allows connection to the light distribution arrangement. A bore, formed in the optical coupling device and having a flat polished surface, houses the light source in a manner such that the optical coupling device can act as a heat sink for the light source.

Arrangement and a method for coupling a light source to a light guide

In this automobile lighting system there is (i) a light source that develops light when in an 'on' state, (ii) an elongated light guide that has an input end for receiving light from the source and an output end to which this light is transmitted by the light guide, (iii) an indicating device at the output end for controlling the passage of light from the output end to a location exterior to the automobile, and (iv) a lens located between the indicating device and the exterior location for receiving light passing through the indicating device from the light guide output end. The indicating device comprises a shutter having an opaque portion, a light blocking position in which the opaque portion blocks the passage of light from the output end to the lens, and a non-blocking position in which light is allowed to pass through the indicating device to the lens. The indicating device also includes shutter-actuating means for shifting the shutter between its light-blocking position and its non-blocking position while the light source remains in its 'on' state.

This coupling means comprises a sleeve containing a bore in which is located a bundle of optical fibers, at least some of which are of compression-deformable material. The input ends of the fibers, which receive light from a light source, are located in a predetermined plane. The bore tapers from a relatively large diameter at a location in a second plane spaced from said predetermined plane to a relatively small diameter at said predetermined plane. The tapered bore is of such a size that the optical fibers therein are laterally compressed and the compression-deformable fibers are so deformed in transverse cross-section relative to their normal cross-sections that the fibers more completely fill the bore in its relatively small diameter region than in said second plane.

A centralized lighting system particularly suited for aerodynamically styled vehicles is disclosed. The centralized lighting system employes a pressurized lamp preferably of a metal halide having quartz light guides merged into portions of its outer surface. The portions of the metal halide lamp that are not merged with the light guides may be coated with a diffusive reflective coating that substantially prevents light from being transmitted through the coating so that all of the light generated by the metal halide lamp is directed into and transmittd by the light guides. The transmitted light of the light guide is distributed throughout vehicle to supply the forward, rearward, and interior illumination needs of the vehicle.

A 'line-of-light' vehicle lighting system employs a moveable mask to control the beam pattern formed by an plurality of fiber optic light bundles coupled to a single high intensity light source. The lighting system comprises a single high intensity light source coupled to forward illumination devices by means of optical light conducting devices. The forward illumination devices include an arrangement of connectors, a mask member and lens elements. The connectors lodge fiber optic light bundles branched off from the optical light conducting devices and emit light through respective apertures. The mask has a plurality of openings for selectively exposing portions of the apertures which, in combination with the lens elements, form the beam pattern. The mask is moveable between two positions to register first and second openings in the mask with associated apertures to form the high and low beam patterns of the forward lighting system.

A lighting subsystem is disclosed that uses optical devices to alter, the actual or apparent optical position of the ends of optical fibers coupled to a high intensity light source so as to provide all of the forward illumination needs for a vehicle. In one embodiment, optical wedges are interposed between a rectangular array of optical fibers and an array of lens elements mountable on the front of a vehicle from which the forward illumination is transmitted therefrom. The imposition of the optical devices alters the actual or apparent optical position of the fibers relative to the lenses and thereby changes the forward illumination from its low to its high beam pattern, to a fog beam illumination or to a cornering illumination pattern. In another embodiment, flat shaped optical members are rotated to provide the various forward illumination needs of the vehicle.
