The invention relates to electrical connectors or more particularly to an improved technique for mounting metal contacts in an electrical connector. Such a technique employs frangible sacrificial ribs in connector channels which engage the contacts upon insertion into the channels and bias the insertion force in a controlled direction thus avoiding connector breakage. The connector has a housing composed of an insulating material and an array of linearly aligned channels extending through a surface of the housing. Each of the channels is defined by internal peripheral walls. At least one frangible dielectric projection extends from a wall of each channel into the channel. The projections are situated either at a same position on each channel wall or at a opposed position on each channel wall of the array of channels.

Sacrificial plastic rib for contact retention

Improved electrical connectors and an improved technique for mounting metal contacts in an electrical connector. Such a technique employs overlapping, staggered arrays of forked electrical contacts in connector channels which engage corresponding blade contacts in a mating connector. The blades are inserted between prongs of the forked contacts. In the preferred embodiment, the electrical connector has an insulating housing having two parallel arrays of linearly aligned, offset, overlapping channels extending inwardly through a front of the housing. Each of the channel arrays extend inwardly through to two arrays of channels at a rear of the first housing. A forked metallic contact having a planar base, a pair of parallel and coplanar prongs at one of the ends separated by a gap, is mounted in each of the front channels such that the prongs from each forked metallic contact is positioned in one of the channels of the rear arrays of channels. A second housing is mated with the first housing. The second housing has an array of linearly aligned electrical contact blades extending out of the second housing. Each blade being positioned between the prongs of one of the forked electrical contacts within a channel of the rear arrays of channels.

Multiple circuit fork contact connector

This invention is related to a latchable connector (10) having a plug (12) and a header (14). The header consists of a plug-receiving section (26) along with a pair of posts (16) which are mechanically connected to a printed circuit board. The posts (16) serve to secure the header (14) to a plug through a plurality of latches (30) mounted in the plug housing (11). Locking projections (58) of the latch (30) engage annular grooves (18) of the posts (16) in order to secure the plug (12) to the header (14). A force applied to the latches (30) to urge them towards each other will serve to release the plug (12) from the header (14).

Latching connector

This application discloses a precision molded cylinder having a substantially cylindrical body. Chordal sections are formed in the body to create a small void between the chordal sections and an opening into which the cylinder is placed. The chordal sections are disposed adjacent to parting lines of the mold such that any flashing resulting from the molding process will project from the chordal sections and not interfere with the fit between the cylinder and the opening.

Precision molded cylinders

A cable bend controller (50) comprising a relatively rigid member includes a body section (52) having first and second cable-engaging sections (56,60) at opposing ends thereof. The first and second cable-engaging sections (56) are securable to a cable at a first and second spaced apart locations. The said body section (52) is curved about a preselected radius such that said first cable-engaging section (56) is oriented at a substantial angle to said second cable-engaging section, (60) the body section thereby defining an externally arcuate concave cable-engaging surface (54). Upon fastening the first and second cable-engaging sections (56,60) to the cable (42), cable (42) is required to assume a bend to lie along said externally arcuate concave cable-engaging surface (54).

A right-angle coaxial electrical connector (22) mountable to a circuit board includes a housing (24) having a plurality of contact-receiving passageways (32) and at least two coaxial contacts (36, 38) disposed in the same column defining a stacked configuration. Each coaxial contact (36, 38) includes an inner terminal and an outer conductor, the inner terminal including a right angle body portion (46) extending outwardly of the housing (24) and concluding in a first connecting portion (44) adapted for mounting to the circuit board. A metal shell (64) having two interlocking halves joinable at opposed assembly faces is disposed over the outwardly extending body portion (46) of the inner terminal thereof and engageable with the outer conductor for connection to ground. In one embodiment, the inner terminal is comprised of two terminal subassemblies (40, 52). As an alternative, the connector housing (222) could be used with an intermixture of board mountable contacts (36, 38) and cable terminated contacts (235).

An electrical connector (40) having a two part articulated housing (42) is disclosed. The connector, intended for surface mounting on a curved surface (74, 76) of a circuit board (56), includes two housing parts (44, 48) that are intercoupled by means of a flexible member (62) that permits relative movement of the two housing parts in a direction toward and away from the mounting surface but is substantially rigid in the lateral direction. The connector (40) is manufactured by stamping and forming a series of the flexible members (62) on a carrier strip (90), passing the carrier strip through a plastic injection mold machine (98) for molding the two housing parts (44, 48) insitu onto the flexible strip (62), and then passing the carrier strip (90) through a contact insertion machine (102) for inserting the contacts (46,50) into the two housing parts (44, 48).

An environmentally, sealed, feedthrough connector of the type that may be used for externally accessing an outdoor TV line amplifier. The connector includes a cylindrical housing having an insert molded contact centrally disposed therein and a deformable O-ring about the insert molded contact. The connector is assembled under an axially compressive force which deforms the O-ring into sealing engagement with the internal wall of the housing.

Sealed coaxial feedthrough connector

Invention is directed to an improved, squeeze-to-release latching mechanism for a pair of intermatable transmission connectors, such as electrical or fiber optic connector assemblies, where access to the sides of the connectors may be limited, thereby preventing a traditional manual unmating thereof. The connectors typically comprises a plug consisting of a housing having top and bottom surfaces, where such housing supports a first transmission component, and a receptacle supporting a second transmission component, where the plug includes a pair of cantilevered flexible arms engagable with complementary latching projections on the receptacle. The arms have exposed intermediate portions manually movable toward one another, such as by squeezing, to disengage the latching projections from the flexible arms. The improved feature hereof is the provision of each intermediate portion having a pair of wing extensions directed toward the top and bottom surfaces of the plug housing, where the ends of the extensions are laterally turned to lie essentially parallel with a respective top or bottom surface. By the construction of this U-configured intermediate portion, the flexible arms may be grasped diagonally and moved toward another to effect an unmating of the plug from the receptacle.

Latching system for intermatable transmission connectors

A self-sacrificing latching system for a pair of intermatable electrical connectors, such as a plug and receptacle, which incorporates a mechanism for unlatching same by the application of a maximum predetermined separating force, such as may be the result of an accident to the plug and receptacle. A first electrical connector includes a pair of flexible arms projecting axially therefrom, where the free end includes a bifurcated portion, while the second electrical connector includes a forward ramp surface against which the flexible arms initially ride to effect mating of the connectors. Further, there is a rearward surface slightly angled, i.e. on the order of about 4.degree. to 10.degree., from a base toward the ramp surface, and a metal spring arm mounted within the second electrical connector in close proximity to the base of the rearward surface. To effect unmating under a maximum predetermined separating force, the bifurcated end will deform or separate allowing the respective connectors to freely unmate.

Self sacrificing latching system

A capacitive coupling includes a conductive clip 32 adapting to an outer profile of an electrical connector 1 and providing a capacitive coupling with multiple conduction paths through capacitor elements 33 held by the clip 32 in pressure engagement with a conductive shell 9 of the connector 1, the clip 32 further providing a voltage discharge path between the clip 32 and the shell 9.

A switch activating plug 10 comprises a housing 12, an inner conductor 17, an intermediate conductor 18 spaced apart from the inner conductor 17, and a dielectric member 19 supporting the inner and intermediate 17,18 conductors. The dielectric member 19 is constructed with axial cavities 88,92 for slidable assembly with the conductive parts of the inner and intermediate conductors 17,18 and in such manner that the inner and intermediate conductors 17,18 are maintained by the dielectric member 19 in electrical isolation from one another. The inner conductor 17 comprises a shaft 58 having a contact head 60 at one end and a terminal 62 at another end. The inner conductor 17 further comprises a flange 66 along the shaft 58 and an offset portion 64 of the shaft 68 spaced from the flange 66. Upon slidable assembly with the dielectric member 19, the flange 66 prevents movement of the inner conductor 17 in one direction, while the offset portion 64 of the shaft 58 prevents movement in an opposite direction, relative to the dielectric member 19. The intermediate conductor 18 includes a cantilevered lancet 80 projecting toward the dielectric member 19. Upon assembly with the dielectric member 19, the cantilevered lancet 80 abuts against an edge 96 of the dielectric member 19 to prevent further slidable movement of the intermediate electrical conductor 18 relative to the dielectric member 19.

Switch activating plug for a coaxial connector

A connector and method of termination for high speed signal cable of small physical dimension. The connector embodies a wire manager plastic fixture (22) into which the fine signal and ground wires (18,20) of a cable (10) are inserted and folded back in a precise location to form an ensemble. This ensemble has a geometry to allow ease of handling and orientation to be inserted into the rear portion of a connector (40) with the wires (18,20) sliding in engagement with slotted connector blade portions (42,46) to assure proper assembly. Blade portions (42,46) are radially forced inwardly to cause the wires (18,20) to be captured in slots therein (44,48) to be additionally terminated as by welding. A variety of types of connector front ends are disclosed.

Method and apparatus for terminating high-speed signal transmission cable

A terminator 1 includes, a conductive shell 2, a disc 12 of insulative material having integral rivets 13 passing through the shell 2, a center contact 19 concentrically in the disc 12, a resistor 26 having a forward extending electrical lead 27 connected to the center contact 19 and having a rearward extending electrical lead 28 passing through the shell 2, and the shell 2 is overlapped and engaged by the rivets 13 and by the rearward extending electrical lead 28.
