The invention relates to a process of producing carbonate esters wherein an alkyl chloroformate is reacted with a phenolsulfonate in an alkaline medium and discloses the improvement of conducting the reaction in the presence of an organic solvent.

The invention relates to a process of producing carbonate esters wherein an alkyl chloroformate is reacted with a phenolsulfonate in an alkaline medium and discloses the improvement whereby dialkylcarbonate formation is reduced by adding an acidifying agent to the reaction mixture after the reaction and before precipitation of the alkylsulfophenyl carbonate.

A method for preparation of solid particulate polyacetal carboxylate. The method comprises agglomerating a solution comprising less than about 1% by weight methanol and between about 30% by weight and about 60% by weight polyacetal carboxylate onto a substrate to produce a free-flowing particulate solid. The solid comprises between about 30% by weight and about 55% by weight polyacetal carboxylate. The polyacetal carboxylate corresponds to the formula: ##STR1## where n is at least about 4 and represents the average chain length of the polyacetal carboxylate in the mixture, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected chemically stable groups that stabilize the polymer against rapid depolymerization in alkaline solution, and M is selected from the group consisting of alkali metals, ammonium, alkyl groups of 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, tetraalkyl ammonium groups, and alkanolamine groups having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain.

Particulate polyacetal carboxylate and methods for preparation thereof

An improved process is provided for producing polymeric acetal carboxylate salts useful as detergent builders. The process comprises polymerization of an alkyl glyoxylate, optionally with one or more comonomers; addition of stabilizing endgroups; and saponification of the polymeric ester to produce the polymeric acetal carboxylate salts. Active yield is improved by reducing the number of polymer chains with unstable temporary endcaps entering the saponification step.

A polymer composition adapted for use in producing polyvinyl halide polymer products comprising a blend of a vinyl halide polymer and a particulate terpolymer having a molecular weight of at least about 100,000 and a glass transition temperature of at least about 50.degree.
