An horticultural blend is disclosed. The horticultural blend includes coal refuse and slag blended with at least a portion of the coal refuse. The coal refuse has a particle size, the particle size corresponding with all material in the coal refuse having a maximum dimension of less than about 2 inches and at least about 25% of the material in the coal refuse being capable of passing through a standard number 4 sieve. The horticultural blend has a pH within a range of about 3.5 and about 10 and the horticultural blend facilitates growth of vegetation when applied to a coal refuse pile at a thickness of less than about 2 feet.

Coal refuse horticultural blend

A coal refuse remediation process is described. The process includes providing coal refuse and blending a slag with at least a portion of the coal refuse to form a medium. The coal refuse has a particle size. The medium has a pH within a range of about 3.5 and about 10 and the medium facilitates growth of vegetation when applied to a coal refuse pile at a thickness of less than about 24 inches.

Coal refuse remediation process

The present disclosure describes a method of treating soil and a method of sequestering heavy metals in soil. The method of treating soil includes applying a blend to the soil to form treated soil, the blend including a slag by-product having a soluble compound. The soluble compound includes silicon. The method of sequestering heavy metals includes applying a blend to soil to form treated soil, the blend including a slag by-product having a soluble compound, and forming a substantially inert particle in the treated soil, the substantially inert particle including the blend and the heavy metals.
