This disclosure relates to a compressor having a shaft, wherein the shaft is hollow to define a fluid passage extending along the shaft and a motor arranged along the shaft. A motor cooling line is configured to convey a cooling fluid to the motor, wherein the motor cooling line is fluidly connected to the fluid passage. The compressor may be a refrigerant compressor used in a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) chiller system.

An example refrigerant system according to an exemplary aspect of this disclosure includes, among other things, a refrigerant loop having at least a condenser, an evaporator, and a compressor. The compressor includes a motor in communication with a variable speed drive. The system further includes a cooling circuit including a pressure regulator downstream of a heat exchanger, the heat exchanger absorbing heat from the variable speed drive.

The compressor further includes a housing enclosing the electric motor, a stator cooling passage provided within the housing, and a rotor cooling passageway provided within the housing. The rotor cooling passageway is independent of the stator cooling passageway.
