A method of making molds which is easy, quick and can be accomplished at room temperatures and atmospheric pressures. The method includes applying at least one layer of gel to a male mandrel and curing at least one layer of polyester impregnated fabric to the gel layer. At least one layer of epoxy impregnated fabric is cured to the polyester impregnated fabric. At least one layer of plaster impregnated is cured to the epoxy impregnated fabric. At least one layer of epoxy impregnated fabric is cured to the plaster impregnated fabric. The resulting mold is removed from the male mandrel.

Mold making method

A method for boring well-defined holes in a composite material such as graphite/epoxy. A slurry of silicon carbide powder and water is projected onto a work area of the composite material in which a hole is to be bored with a conventional drill bit. The silicon carbide powder and water slurry allow the drill bit, while experiencing only normal wear, to bore smooth, cylindrical holes in the composite material.

Method for machining holes in composite materials

A viewing chamber which permits observation of a sample retained therein includes a pair of double window assemblies mounted in opposed openings in the walls thereof so that a light beam can directly enter and exit from the chamber. A flexible mounting arrangement for the outer windows of the window assemblies enables the windows to be brought into proper alignment. An electrical heating arrangement prevents fogging of the outer windows whereas desiccated air in the volume between the outer and inner windows prevents fogging of the latter.

Double window viewing chamber assembly

Plasticized elastomer is securely bonded to a metal surface by interposing between the adhesive-coated metal surface and the elastomer a sheet of material obtained by combining adhesive with a portion of the elastomer that has been treated to remove plasticizers therefrom and heating the assembly in a mold under pressure. The sheet material is made up by dissolving a portion of the plasticized elastomer in an organic solvent, casting the solution, exposing it to a vacuum to remove the solvent and plasticizers, dissolving the de-plasticized material in liquid adhesive and casting and drying the resulting liquid.
