The invention relates to lubricants which contain a phosphorus to nitrogen ratio of &#x2267;1.0 and a sulfur content of &#x3e;1.4 wt. %. The phosphorus contribution is primarily from an acid phosphate species and the sulfur content is primarily from an antiwear agent. This lubricant composition has been found to provide exceptional protection to new gears or 'green gears', during the break-in phase.

Fluids for enhanced gear protection

The invention relates to compositions suitable as additive packages for lubricants and other functional fluids, the composition comprising sulfur-containing extreme pressure components, phosphorus-containing anti-wear additives, a triazole-containing species. A preferred use is in industrial gear oils. In embodiments, enhance protection in the areas of bearing wear and micropitting are obtained.

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, at least one organic polysulfide comprising less than about 88% dihydrocarbyl trisulfide, from up to about 5% dihydrocarbyl disulfide, and more than about 7 wt. % dihydrocarbyl higher polysulfides, and at least one phosphorus or boron compound, or mixtures of two or more thereof. The invention also relates to concentrates and greases containing the above combination. The invention also relates to methods of making the organic polysulfide.
