A sensing device 50 comprising an O.sub.2 sensor 22, a pump 37, a compressor 19, and a heater 21 is provided to quickly sense the amount of O.sub.2 in a combustion product gas. A sample of the combustion product gas is compressed to a pressure slightly above one atmosphere by compressor 19. Next, heater 21 heats the sample between 800.degree. C. and 900.degree. C. Next, pump 37 causes the sample to be flushed against electrode 32 located in O.sub.2 sensor 22 6000 to 10,000 times per second. Reference air at approximately one atmosphere is provided to electrode 31 of O.sub.2 sensor 22. Accordingly, O.sub.2 sensor 22 produces a voltage which is proportional to the amount of oxygen in the combustion product gas. This voltage may be used to control the amount of O.sub.2 entering into the combustion chamber 10 which produces the combustion product gas.

Method and apparatus for obtaining dynamic calibrations of pressure transducers. A calibration head (15), a flexible tubing (23) and a bellows (20) enclose a volume of air at atmospheric pressure with a transducer (11) to be calibrated subject to the pressure inside the volume. All of the other apparatus in the drawing apply oscillations to bellows (20) causing the volume to change thereby applying oscillating pressures to transducer (11) whereby transducer (11) can be calibrated.

Apparatus for simulating varying levels of friction in the bearings 13 of a free rolling tail afterbody 11 on a canard-controlled missile 12 to determine friction effects on aerodynamic control characteristics. A ring 16 located between the missile body and the afterbody is utilized in a servo system to create varying levels of friction between the missile body and the afterbody to simulate bearing friction.

An indicator for recording the load at which a fatigue specimen breaks during the last cycle of a fatigue test. A load cell is attached to the specimen which is alternately subjected to tension and compression loads. The output of the load cell which is proportional to the load on the specimen is applied to the input of a peak detector. Each time that the specimen is subjected to a compression load, means are provided for appyling a positive voltage to the reset of the peak detector to reset it. Hence, during the last cycle of the tension load the peak detector measures the maximum load on the specimen. Means are also provided for disconnecting the load cell from the peak detector when there is a failure in the specimen.
