The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for enhancing the performance of visual display units which utilize plasma display panels. More specifically, the present invention provides methods and apparatus for providing an electrical noise suppressing/chromaticity enhancing accessory device for positioning in front of the viewing surface of a plasma display panel. In its most basic embodiment, the accessory device of the present invention comprises a first and a second rigid substrate laminated together by a laminating layer; an optically selective coating providing high photopic transmittance, continuous high electrical conductivity for RFI shielding, and reflectivity specifically within the near-IR region that is mechanically protected by being sandwiched between one rigid substrate and the laminating layer; and, a multiple-dye coating for selectively absorbing IR energy emissions and selectively balancing the chromaticity of the PDP display. The combination of the IR absorption and color-correction due to the multiple-dye coating and the near-IR reflectivity due to the optically selective coating surprisingly results in very good suppression of IR emissions from the PDP within the spectral range of about 800 to about 2500 nm and chromaticity enhancement while simultaneously maintaining good photopic transmittance.

Methods and apparatus for providing a near-IR emission suppressing/color

The present invention is directed to apparatus for enhancing the performance of visual display units which utilize plasma display panels. More specifically, the present invention provides apparatus for providing an electrical noise suppressing/chromaticity enhancing accessory device for positioning in front of the viewing surface of a plasma display panel (PDP). In its most basic embodiment, the accessory device of the present invention comprises an optically selective coating providing high photopic transmittance, continuous high electrical conductivity for RFI shielding, and reflectivity specifically within the near-IR region. It also preferably includes a multiple-dye coating for selectively absorbing IR energy emissions and selectively balancing the chromaticity of the PDP display and a plastic substrate layer to provide impact resistance. Apparatus for providing a near-IR emission suppressing/color enhancing

The present invention is directed to methods and apparatus for enhancing the performance of visual display units which utilize plasma display panels. More specifically, the present invention provides methods and apparatus for providing an optically enhancing/noise suppressing device for positioning in front of the viewing surface of a plasma display panel. The device also increases the impact resistance of the PDP. The device of the present invention is manufactured separately from the PDP. The device may be provided with attachment means for securing the device to the surface of the visual display unit in a position in front of the viewing surface of the PDP or may be designed to be free-hanging, i.e., suspended, or otherwise positioned in front of the viewing surface of the PDP. In its most basic embodiment, the device of the present invention comprises multiple layers of different materials including at least one plastic substrate layer for impact resistance, an optically selective coating providing high photopic transmittance, continuous high electrical conductivity for RFI shielding, and reflectivity specifically within the near-IR region, and an IR absorbing coating for absorbing IR energy emissions. In a preferred embodiment, the IR absorbing coating constitutes a dye material which is preferably selected to also be color-correcting with respect to the particular PDP.

The present invention is directed to a sputtering method for preparing optical coatings having low light scattering characteristics by controlling the angle of incidence of the material being sputtered without significantly reducing the coating efficiency of the sputtering process. The angle of incidence is controlled by reducing the collision scattering of the material being sputtered and by intercepting the sputtered material that would without interception arrive at the surface to be coated at high angles of incidence. The collision scattering is reduced by utilizing a sputtering gas that has a mass less than the mass of the material being sputtered.

Methods for preparing low scatter optical coatings

A new solar cell cover comprises a substrate that transmits the spectral region to which the solar cell responds and a multilayer infrared-reflecting coating which incorporates means for suppressing low order reflections. The multilayer coating may also contain ultraviolet or blue coatings and be formed on one or both substrate surfaces. The multilayer coating reflects spectral bands which are adjacent to the short- and long-wavelength limits of the spectral response of the cell. The upper limit wavelength of the short-wavelength reflection band and the lower wavelength limit of the long-wavelength reflection band are independent and may be separately specified.

A system and process for forming optical quality, protective, relatively thick, thin film coatings on workpieces such as detectors or solar cells. The apparatus includes a rotary cylindrical sputtering system which incorporates separate deposition devices and at least one chemical reaction device for simultaneously (1) depositing materials which form tensile and compressive oxides and (2) oxidizing the deposited materials. The system also includes a stressometer system, preferably a cantilevered beam stressometer system which monitors the stress of the depositing film in-situ. The monitored stress levels are used to control the relative amounts of compressive and tensile materials which are deposited and, thus, control stress in the thin film coatings. In a preferred embodiment for forming protective covers on solar cells, the deposition devices are linear magnetron sputter cathode devices having silicon and aluminum targets, and the reaction device is a linear magnetron ion source oxidizer device. Film stress in the thin film coating is controlled by controlling power to the silicon and aluminum targets.

Thin film coating and method

A structure that provides suppression of reflectance of radiation and thus enhanced emissivity is fabricated with a substrate that supports alternating absorber and spacer layers with interleaved antireflectance coatings formed of thin films of different materials having different indices of refraction. Alternate antireflectance coatings are mirror images of the prior deposited antireflectance coatings.

Article and coating having improved reflectance suppression

Article having improved reflectance suppression comprising a substrate formed of a material having a reststrahlen band and having at least one surface and a coating carried by said one surface. The coating comprises at least one period with each period consisting of a spacer layer and an absorber layer. The spacer layer is formed of a material having a low index of refraction and has an optical thickness ranging from approximately one quarter of a wavelength and less. The spacer layer also has low absorption in the visible region of the spectrum. The absorber layer is formed of a material which has substantial absorption near the reststrahlen band. The absorber layer has a complex index of refraction as a function of wavelength which is relatively close to the index of refraction of the substrate.

Articles having improved reflectance suppression

Visible transmitting and infrared reflecting filter having a substrate formed of a material capable of transmitting visible light or absorbing visible light and having a surface and a coating carried by the surface of the substrate. The coating comprises at least one period of a multilayer stack which is reflecting in the infrared and transmitting at shorter wavelengths. The period is formed of a plurality of layers of high and low index materials with alternate layers being formed of materials having a high index of refraction and the other layers being formed of materials having a low index of refraction. At least one anti-reflection layer is disposed between adjacent layers of the period for matching the layers of the period to each other in the visible so that the transmission of the filter is relatively high over a relatively wide wavelength band at shorter wavelengths while maintaining high reflection and low absorption at the longer wavelengths.
