An automated trimming system is provided that includes a vision system identifying the number of rings positioned within a coil and sheared positions where the rings need to be cut. One or more trimming mechanisms receive the sheared positions and proceed to cut the rings at the sheared positions. A hook arrangement interfaces with the coil for transferring the coil to a trimming area. Moreover, an automated trimming system is provided that includes a coil having a plurality of rings. One or more trimming mechanisms select a number of rings from the coil and proceed to form a sample of desired length, by cutting a portion of the rings. A receiver unit receives the sample from the one or more trimming mechanisms to evaluate the quality of the sample.

A roll mounting system is provided that includes a roll assembly coupled to one or more rolls. The roll assembly is configured to position the one or more rolls using a tapered assembly for mounting or dismounting of the one or more rolls. Also, the roll mounting system includes a torque assembly coupled to the roll assembly. The torque assembly is configured to provide torque to the roll assembly for mounting or dismounting of the one more rolls.

A system for cooling rolling mill material is provided that includes a conveyor system that receives rolling mill material and passes the rolling mill material through one or more cooling regions. A cooling structure that operates uniformly across the central and edge regions of the conveyor system. The cooling structure uses a first jet of air for cooling the central portion of the rolling mill material. A nozzle deck is positioned on the edge regions of the conveyor system produces a second of jet of air for cooling the edge portions of the rolling mill. The nozzle deck includes one or more adjustable nozzle structures for controlling the air flow produced by the second jet of air by varying the size of their air passage regions.

A laying head for forming an axially moving hot rolled product into a helical series of rings includes a quill rotatable about an axis, with a tubular body journaled for rotation between axially spaced bearings, and a nose projecting axially and forwardly from its tubular body. A product guide is carried by the quill. The product guide is configured to form the product into a helical series of rings. A guide trough provides a helical extension of the product guide. Major portions of the product guide and the guide trough are carried on a continuous helical support on the nose of the quill. The guide trough is channel shaped, with a continuous bottom defining the rim of the helical support, and with segmented detachable side walls.

A trim shear is adapted to trim the front and tail ends of a hot rolled product exiting from a rolling mill along a mill pass line and travelling at either high or low speeds, depending on the size of the product being rolled. The trim shear comprises a trim station having a high speed a set of trim knives configured and arranged to trim the front and tail ends of high speed products, and a different low speed set of trim knives disposed laterally from the high speed set of trim knives and configured and arranged to trim the front and tail ends of low speed products; and the trim station is transversely shifted with respect to the mill pass line to alternatively locate either one or the other of the sets of trim knives in an active position on the mill pass line.

A trim shear is adapted to trim the front and tail ends of a hot rolled product exiting from a rolling mill along a mill pass line and travelling at either high or low speeds, depending on the size of the product being rolled. The trim shear comprises a trim station having a high speed a set of trim knives configured and arranged to trim the front and tail ends of high speed products. A different low speed set of trim knives are disposed laterally from the high speed set of trim knives and configured and arranged to trim the front and tail ends of low speed products. The trim station is shifted transversely with respect to the mill pass line to alternatively locate either one or the other of the sets of trim knives in an active position on the mill pass line.

A method is described in which a length of hot rolled product is decelerated in the course of being passed through the rotating curved guide of a coiler. The product exits the coiler at a reduced velocity and is delivered to and progressively accumulated on a cylindrical drum as a helical formation of rings. The drum is rotated to continuously unwind the accumulating product at the reduced velocity. The tail end of the product is retained in the coiler until substantially all of the rings previously deposited on the drum have been unwound.

A rotary shear for subdividing a product moving longitudinally along a path comprises a parallel pair of shafts having cutting blades connected thereto. The shafts are on opposite sides of and arranged symmetrically with respect to a center line of the shear. Driven gears on each of the shafts are spaced one from the other. A first pinion gear is in meshed relationship with one of the driven gears, and a second pinion gear in meshed relationship with the other of the driven gears. The first pinion gear has a diameter smaller than the diameter of the second pinion gear. The first and second pinion gears are in an intermeshed relationship at a location spaced laterally from the center line of the shear.

A method of processing different sized long products delivered from a rolling mill, comprising forming products within a first range of sizes into helical formations of rings having a first diameter, and alternatively forming products within a second range of sizes larger than the largest product size within said first range into helical formations of rings having a second diameter larger than said first diameter. The helical formations of rings are deposited on a conveyor for transport to a reforming station where they are gathered into coils.

Method of and system for processing different sized long products

In a laying head for forming a longitudinally moving hot rolled product into a helix, a tubular quill has a central axis of rotation and a through passageway extending along the central axis from a first end to an opposite second end of the quill. The interior quill surface has a cylindrical section leading from the first end of the passageway to a radially outwardly flared section which in turn leads to the second end of the passageway. A laying pipe is received in the through passageway. The laying pipe has an entry end aligned with the central axis at the first end of the passageway, a curved intermediate portion surrounded by the flared section of the interior quill surface, and an end portion projecting axially from the second end of the passageway to a delivery end spaced radially from the central axis. A first support at the first end of the passageway radially supports the entry end of the laying pipe, and a second support projects axially into the passageway from the second end of the quill to provide support for the curved intermediate portion of the laying pipe.
