Compositions comprising polyamides, polyolefins and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers useful as compatibilizers, related processes and articles made therefrom. A composition comprising from 50 to 99.4 percent by weight of a polyolefin, from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight of a polyamide, from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer comprising from 50 to 95 mole percent ethylene groups and from 5 to 50 mole percent vinyl alcohol groups and less than 5.0 mole percent and preferably less than 2.0 mole percent unhydrolyzed vinyl acetate groups.

Blends of polyamide, polyolefin, and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer

Compositions comprising polyamides, polyolefins and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers useful as compatabilizers, related processes and articles made therefrom. A composition comprising from 50 to 99.4 percent by weight of a polyolefin, from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight of polyamide, from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer comprising from 50 to 95 mole percent ethylene groups and from 5 to 59 mole percent vinyl alcohol groups and less than 5.0 mole percent and preferably less than 2.0 mole percent unhydrolyzed vinyl acetate groups.

A novel adhesive is described, consisting of a matrix-matrix polyblend of polymer components useful in an adhesive tie layer to bond incompatible polymer layers. The adhesives are a blend of the components making up the incompatible polymer layers themselves, or polymers substantially similar to these, and are melt processed to produce a matrix-matrix morphology with mechanical interlocking of the polymer components that is maintained upon cooling. Additives may be provided in one or both adhesive components to improve the cohesive strength of the adhesive formed by the mechanical interlocking.

Matrix-matrix polyblend adhesives and method of bonding incompatible

Thin polymer films containing small sized platelet type filler. The polymer has a melt index of from 0.01 to 10 grams per 10 minutes at 190.degree. C. to 250.degree. C.as measured on ASTM Test No. D-1238 at a load of 1000 to 2160 grams. The preferred polymer is polycaprolactam or high density polyethylene. There is from 10 to 50 percent of a platelet filler having an average equivalent diameter of from 1 to 8 micrometers, a maximum equivalent diameter of about 25 micrometers, and an average thickness of less than 0.5 micrometers. The preferred filler is talc. The film is from 10 to 100 micrometers thick and can be a single ply or a laminate.

Polymer films containing platelet particles

The permeation resistance to gases and vapors of polymeric articles including thin walled articles such as films and bottles can be increased by annealing the film. A preferred embodiment is one where the preferred polymer is polycaprolactam or high density polyethylene. There is from 1 to 50 percent of a platelet filler having an average equivalent diameter of from 1 to 8 micrometers, a maximum equivalent diameter of about 25 micrometers, and an average thickness of less than 0.5 micrometers.

Annealed thin walled polymer articles and method to anneal

C. as measured on ASTM Test No. D-1238 at a load of 1000 to 2160 grams. The preferred polymer is polycaprolactam or high density polyethylene. There is from 10 to 50 percent of a platelet filler having an average equivalent diameter of from 1 to 8 micrometers, a maximum equivalent diameter of about 25 micrometers, and an average thickness of less than 0.5 micrometers. The preferred filler is talc. The film is from 10 to 100 micrometers thick and can be a single ply or a laminate.

Disclosed is a polyamide film of low crystallinity suitable for use in the manufacture of sheet molding compound (SMC). The sheet is produced from a blend comprising a polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyepsiloncaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide or mixtures thereof, and about 10 to 30 wt. %, based on the total weight of said blend, of a polyolefin compound, or copolymer thereof, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. The film has a tear strength of at least about 400 grams in the longitudinal direction as measured by ASTM D-1004-66.

Process to produce sheet molding compound using a polyamide release film

A composition of matter comprising a polyamide, preferably polyepsiloncaprolactam, and from 1 to 65 percent of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. The composition is useful for making moldings, films, and fibers.

Polyamide release film for sheet molding compound

A sheet formed from a uniform blend of from about 80 to 97% by weight of polyethylene terephthalate having an intrinsic viscosity of above about 0.9 and a melt viscosity at 525.degree. F. of above about 10,000 poises and correspondingly from about 20 to 3% by weight of a polycarbonate resin having an intrinsic viscosity of about 0.4 to 0.6 and a melt viscosity at 500.degree. F. of less than 50,000 poises; said sheet having a haze value as determined by ASTM D-1003 of less than about 2% and being essentially amorphous and non-oriented. Also disclosed is a process for forming a sheet which comprises uniformly blending the composition, extruding the composition into a sheet at a temperature between about 490.degree. to 530.degree. F. and rapidly cooling the sheet by contact with at least one cooling surface maintained at a surface temperature in the range of about 50.degree. to 160.degree. F. for a period of time not exceeding about 15 seconds. Containers may be formed from such sheets by a thermoforming step at temperatures in the range of about 210.degree. to 280.degree. F.

Transparent sheets and containers formed from polycarbonate-polyester

This invention provides a film or sheet capable of being thermoformed into a shaped article and being formed from a blend of about 60 to 85 parts by weight of a polyethylene terephthalate polymer having an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 0.90 and correspondingly about 40 to 15 parts by weight of a polycarbonate polymer, the polyethylene terephthalate portion of the film or sheet having a degree of crystallinity in the range of about 20 to 40%. The film is essentially non-oriented. The present invention also provides shaped articles thermoformed from such film or sheet, such as cook-in-trays. Moreover, this invention provides a process of forming such film or sheet which comprises the steps of blending about 60 to 85 parts by weight of a polyethylene terephthalate polymer having an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 0.90 with correspondingly about 40 to 15 parts by weight of a polycarbonate resin, extruding the resultant blend at a temperature of above about 500.degree.F onto a moving support such as a casting roll while maintaining the surface of the support at a temperature of about 225.degree. to 380.degree.F whereby a film or sheet of the blend is formed, and collecting the thus formed film or sheet.
