A photovoltaic device and method include a substrate layer having a plurality of structures including peaks and troughs formed therein. A continuous photovoltaic stack is conformally formed over the substrate layer and extends over the peaks and troughs. The photovoltaic stack has a thickness of less than one micron and is configured to transduce incident radiation into current flow.

Efficient nanoscale solar cell and fabrication method

Techniques for fabricating nanowire/microwire-based solar cells are provided. In one, a method for fabricating a solar cell is provided. The method includes the following steps. A doped substrate is provided. A monolayer of spheres is deposited onto the substrate. The spheres include nanospheres, microspheres or a combination thereof. The spheres are trimmed to introduce space between individual spheres in the monolayer. The trimmed spheres are used as a mask to pattern wires in the substrate. The wires include nanowires, microwires or a combination thereof. A doped emitter layer is formed on the patterned wires. A top contact electrode is deposited over the emitter layer. A bottom contact electrode is deposited on a side of the substrate opposite the wires.

Nano/microwire solar cell fabricated by nano/microsphere lithography

A microcavity structure is provided. The structure comprises a cavity layout that enables centering of reflowed solder at each of one or more interconnect locations and protrusion of the reflowed solder sufficiently from the cavity to facilitate wetting. Techniques are also provided for producing a microcavity structure, for using injection molded solder (IMS) for micro bumping, as well as for using injection molded solder (IMS) for three-dimensional (3D) packaging.

A method for forming ohmic contacts for semiconductor devices, in accordance with the present invention, includes forming a layer containing metal which includes dopants integrally formed therein. The layer containing metal is patterned to form components for a semiconductor device, and a semiconductor layer is deposited for contacting the layer containing metal. The semiconductor device is annealed to outdiffuse dopants from the layer containing metal into the semiconductor layer to form ohmic contacts therebetween.
