A hammer-type stapler in which the staple driving element and the staple drive track defining structure are constructed and arranged with respect to the frame structure to move through a drive stroke incident to an operator grasping a handle portion and manually impacting the staple drive track defining structure on a workpiece. The direction of guided movement of a staple stick along the staple feed track is at an angle greater than 90.degree. with respect to the direction of the drive stroke of the staple driving element within the staple drive track, the arrangement being such that the leading staple will be driven into the workpiece in the direction of the drive stroke enabling the hand grip portion to be positioned for manual gripping so that the knuckles are spaced from a flat workpiece surface in which a staple has been driven generally perpendicularly therein.

A hammer-type stapler in which the staple driving element and the staple drive track defining structure are constructed and arranged with respect to the frame structure to move through a drive stroke incident to an operator grasping a handle portion and manually impacting the staple drive track defining structure on a workpiece to arrest the movement of the drive track structure on the workpiece while the frame structure and the staple driving element continue to move toward the workpiece with respect to the arrested drive track structure. The staple driving element is constructed and arranged with respect to the frame structure and the drive track structure such that the continued movement of the staple driving element toward the workpiece with respect to the arrested drive track structure is further and faster than the continued movement of the frame structure toward the workpiece with respect to the arrested drive track structure enabling the staple driving element to effect a drive stroke through the drive track and to drive a staple therein into the workpiece while the frame structure is undergoing a relative movement with respect to the drive track structure which is less than substantially equal to the relative movement of the staple driving element with respect to the drive track structure during the drive stroke of the staple driving element.

The present invention is a fastener driving device for driving brads or staples into a workpiece. The device comprises a main body structure and magazine assembly for receiving a fastener package containing a plurality of fasteners connected together. The fasteners are staples or brads. The main body structure includes a drive track for receiving a lead fastener. A reciprocating driving structure moves through a fastener driving cycle including (1) a drive stroke and (2) a return stroke. The magazine assembly is constructed and arranged such that the lead fastener remains connected to the package until the driving structure engages the lead fastener and separates it during the drive stroke. The magazine assembly includes a movable interior fastener supporting structure and an exterior fastener guiding surface constructed and arranged to support a brad package. The interior fastener supporting structure is constructed and arranged to support a staple package when the device is being used to drive staples. The movable interior fastener supporting structure is configured to apply force in the direction of the exterior fastener guiding surface to provide tightened engagement of the brads in the brad package and thereby prevent undesired movement of the brad package in the driving direction in response to the driving structure engaging the lead brad during the driving stroke.

A stapling plier has a magazine adapted to contain a supply of detachably interconnected staples, and resiliently biased driver and clincher arms pivotally connected to the magazine for movement between open and closed positions. The magazine has an exit throat and the driver and clincher arms are provided respectively with driver and clincher elements. An operating lever is pivotally connected to the clincher arm and has arcuate surfaces in sliding contact with complimentary arcuate surfaces on bearings journalled for rotation on the driver arm. Pivotal closure of the operating lever causes closure of the driver and clincher arms, with an accompanying ejection of a staple from the magazine by the driver element and a clinching of the thus ejected staple against the clinching element.

A spring actuated fastener driving tool has a lift pawl, bearings for supporting the lift pawl for pivotal movement about a first axis into and out of engagement with a power spring, and an operating handle continuously engageable with the bearings and intermittently engageable with the lift pawl. The operating handle is supported by a housing for pivotal movement about a second axis parallel to the first axis through successive driving cycles each including a loading phase during which the pawl remains engaged with the power spring as the power spring is resiliently deflected and loaded, and a release phase during which the pawl is disengaged from the power spring. The housing and the operating handle have guide surfaces which coact in sliding engagement with the bearings to accommodate movement of the bearings towards a reference plane containing the second axis during at least the loading phase of the drive cycles.

A fluid pressure operated nailer in which the fixed nosepiece of the portable housing has an inner portion defining an inner drive track section extending from the fluid pressure chamber in the housing and an outer portion defining an interior guiding recess. A workpiece engaging member defining an outer drive track section is mounted within the interior guiding recess and extends outwardly of the outer end of the fixed nosepiece for movement between an extended workpiece engaging position and a retracted operating position. The inner and outer drive track sections are open laterally to the nail feed track so that a forwardmost nail can be fed from the feed track into the drive track sections. The workpiece engaging member is spring biased into its inoperative position so as to provide positive control of the nail with respect to the driving element during the entire drive stroke including recoil movement of the portable housing.

A fluid pressure operated nailer is provided including a portable housing having a fixed generally longitudinally extending chamber axis, a fluid pressure actuated mechanism mounted in the housing for movement through successive operative cycles. The nailer includes an elongated nail driving element having a nail engaging end, an opposite end and a longitudinal driver axis extending therebetween. A housing nosepiece is provided which includes surfaces defining a leading nail containing space wherein a nail axis of the leading nail is laterally spaced with respect to the fixed chamber axis. The nosepiece includes surfaces defining a nail feed track extending to the leading nail containing space for guiding a releasably interconnected supply of nails engaged therewith along the nail feed track for generally longitudinal movement therefrom. The nosepiece also includes a lateral moving assembly for causing the nail engaging end of the nail driving element during an initial portion of the drive stroke to engage the leading nail in the nail separating position with the driver axis at the nail engaging end thereof spaced laterally from the chamber axis, and during an intermediate portion of the drive stroke to move laterally with the leading nail engaged thereby and moved therewith until the driver axis and nail axis are generally aligned with the chamber axis. During a final portion of the drive stroke, the engaging end of said nail driving element remains with the driver axis and nail axis generally aligned with the chamber axis, until the nail is driven into a workpiece.

A piston and a fastener driving element connection including interengaging threads on the piston and fastener driving element and a thermoplastic locking compound between the interengaging threads. The connection being adjustable by following a method including the steps of heating the threaded connection sufficient to soften the thermoplastic locking compound, effecting a relative turning movement between the fastener driving element and piston while the thermoplastic locking compound is softened to an extent sufficient to bring the fastener driving element and piston into the desired position of adjustment, and then allowing the softened thermoplastic locking compound to harden.

Method of adjusting an adjustable piston-driver connection

A piston and a fastener driving element connection including interengaging threads on the piston and fastener driving element and a thermoplastic locking compound between the interengaging threads. The connection being adjustable by following a method comprising the steps of heating the threaded connection sufficient to soften the thermoplastic locking compound, effecting a relative turning movement between the fastener driving element and piston while the thermoplastic locking compound is softened to an extent sufficient to bring the fastener driving element and piston into the desired position of adjustment, and then allowing the softened thermoplastic locking compound to harden.

Adjustable piston-driver connection and method of adjusting

An improved nosepiece and nail feeding assembly operable to accommodate different nail packages within a range of nail sizes of 11/2' to 4'. The assembly includes structure defining the lower end of the drive track which includes a replaceable annular member at the discharge end made of wear resistant material and a feed tooth of substantial length disposed thereabove when a nail is being driven which closes the adjacent area of communication between the drive track and the nail feed track to avoid jams but is capable of resiliently yielding to avoid damage during inadvertent jams.

A fastener driving tool with an improved fastener package supporting magazine canister assembly constructed essentially of three plastic parts: (1) a mounting part, (2) a package supporting part, and (3) a package covering part. A plurality of ledges on the exterior periphery of a portion of a peripheral wall of the supporting part and series of cooperating ledges on the mounting part act as an adjustable mount for releasably fixedly supporting the package supporting part on the mounting part in a selected one of a plurality of different operative positions depending upon the nail size of the package which is selected. A movable connection serves to support the package covering part on the mounting part for movement between (1) an operative position overlying the bottom wall of the package supporting part in any of its selected operative positions so as to contain the corresponding selected package in point supported relation on the bottom wall and within the peripheral confinement of the peripheral wall of the package supporting part, and (2) an access position wherein the space overlying the bottom wall is sufficiently open to permit movement of a package into point supported relation to the bottom wall within the peripheral wall of the package supporting part. A releasable lock is provided for releasably locking the package covering part in its operative position.

Fastener driving tool with adjustable three-part magazine canister

A spring actuated staple driving device including a combined housing and magazine assembly constructed of an outer metal casing and an interior plastic core, the plastic core being provided by a molded body which provides key functional surfaces which materially aids in the assembly and accuracy of assembly. The device utilizes an elongated leaf spring to effect the staple driving action and provides a direct movement of the leaf spring by the actuating mechanism. The fixed end of the leaf spring is bent to form a segmental cylindrical surface which receives a cylindrical pin portion to control the movement of the leaf spring and an adjusting mechanism for the cylindrical pin is provided.
