Brake system for a trailer vehicle and a valve for use therein

A vehicle train comprising a tractor and at least two trailers wherein each trailer has a brake sub-system. The brake sub-system includes a pressure transducer on the trailer responsive to pressure of a fluid pressure brake demand signals supplied thereto to provide an electrical brake demand signal and an electronic controller on the trailer responsive to the electrical brake demand signal to provide an electrical brake operating signal. The brake sub-system also includes a brake valve on the trailer responsive to the electrical brake operating signal supplied to the brake valve by the electronic controller to supply fluid to an actuator to operate a trailer brake under a brake pressure, from a primary source, determined in accordance with the electrical brake operating signal.

Brake system for a vehicle train

A braking system for a vehicle, having a transducer capable of responding to a fluid pressure brake demand signal to provide an electrical brake demand signal to an electronic control means which is responsive to the electrical brake demand signal to provide an electrical brake operating signal. The electrical brake operating signal is supplied to an electrically operable valve means which is arranged to supply a fluid pressure brake operating signal from a source of fluid under pressure to control a supply valve which supplied fluid from the source to at least one actuator for brake application under a brake pressure determined in accordance with the electrical brake operating signal. An electrically operable fluid pressure brake demand signal control valve controls the supply of the fluid pressure brake demand signal to the supply valve as a substitute for the fluid pressure brake operating signal originating from the source.

Vehicle braking system

Brakes (1,2; 3,4) on the wheels (5,6; 7,8) at opposite ends of a common axle are each controlled by a separate skid control unti and a single latch valve (21) common to both units closes at the first skid point to be sensed by a sensor (9,10; 11,12) on either wheel. A control module (13) responsive to signals from at least one of the sensors is operative to operate the latch valve and the skid control unit for the respective wheel. When a skid-signal is detected from a sensor on only one wheel the latch valve closes and the brake on the skidding wheel is released and re-applied when the skid signal terminates. The brake is re-applied in a fast first stage, due to pressure from an associated memory chanber and thereafter in a slower second stage due to the latch valve restricting the increase of braking pressure when it is closed. The rate of increase of brake pressure of the non-skidding wheel is restricted to that of the slow stage from the time that the latch valve is closed due to the other wheel skidding. The pressure in the memory chamber can decoy during a skid to compensate for pressure build up elsewhere in the system and so ensure that the pressure to which the brakes are applied in the first stage of brake re-application is not more than that at which the skid occurred.

Fluid-pressure operated anti-skid braking systems for vehicles

Brakes (3, 4) on the wheels (7, 8) on a common axle are each controlled by a separate skid control unit (16, 17) each including a memory chamber (33, 34), and a single latch valve (21) common to both units closes at the first skid point to be sensed by a sensor (11, 12) on each wheel. The rate of re-application of the two brakes is controlled in response to signals from the individual sensors, but at rates of pressure increase determined by each respective memory chamber, and by flows of pressure controlled by restrictors (47).
