Techniques for determining power relaxation values are disclosed. The power relaxation values may be determined according to an ending resource block (RB) and a number of RBs in a contiguous allocation. In one aspect, the power relaxation values are arranged into regions based, at least in part, on transmission channel bandwidths and the distance from a protected adjacent channel. A user equipment (UE) can determine a power relaxation value for its current allocation using the ending RB index and contiguous RB length and can adjust its transmission power accordingly. Evolved NodeBs may estimate the power relaxation that a particular UE has selected in order to more accurately determine the transmit power available to the UE. Using the more accurate estimate of transmit power, the eNB may schedule the UE for uplink transmissions accordingly.

Maximum power reduction for interference control in adjacent channels

Transmitters supporting multiple modulation modes and/or multiple frequency bands are described. A transmitter may perform large signal polar modulation, small signal polar modulation, and/or quadrature modulation, which may support different modulation schemes and systems. Circuit blocks may be shared by the different modulation modes to reduce cost and power. For example, a single modulator and a single power amplifier may be used for small signal polar modulation and quadrature modulation. The transmitter may apply pre-distortion to improve performance, to allow a power amplifier to support multiple frequency bands, to allow the power amplifier to operate at higher output power levels, etc. Envelope and phase distortions due to non-linearity of the power amplifier may be characterized for different input levels and different bands and stored at the transmitter. Thereafter, envelope and phase signals may be pre-distorted based on the stored characterizations to compensate for non-linearity of the power amplifier.

Multi-mode and multi-band transmitters for wireless communication

A mobile wireless terminal (MWT) includes multiple wireless modems. The multiple modems have their respective transmit outputs combined together to produce an aggregate transmit output. The multiple modems can concurrently transmit data in a reverse link direction and receive data in a forward link direction. The MWT is constrained to operate under an aggregate transmit power limit. Each of the multiple modems has an individual transmit limit related to the aggregate transmit power limit. An MWT controller adjusts the individual transmit power limits in the multiple modems based on an aggregate transmit power limit of the MWT and respective transmit power estimates from the modems, to cause each individual transmit power limit to track a corresponding individual modem transmit power.

Controlling multiple modems in a wireless terminal using dynamically varying modem transmit power limits

When operating, over-limit ones of the multiple modems are deactivated and then reactivated to keep an aggregate transmit power of all of the modems below the aggregate limit, and to maximize data through-put on the forward and reverse links.

Wireless terminal operating under an aggregate transmit power limit using multiple modems having fixed individual transmit power limits

Controlling multiple modems in a wireless terminal using energy-per-bit determinations

Transmit power of an external antenna unit coupled to a wireless device is controlled by obtaining an output power measurement of the information signal transmitting from an antenna unit, which when operating with wireless network technology may also be referred to as an outdoor unit. The output power measurement is used by a hand held device, to adjust the power of the transmitted information signal. The output power measurement is determined by obtaining an output power measurement, modulating the power measurement onto a carrier, and transmitting the modulated measurement signal to hand held device. The modulated measurement signal is received by a cradle or hand held wireless device and demodulated. The hand held device uses the measurement to adjust the transmit power of the information signal.

Power output control of a car kit by a coupled wireless device

A compact, low cost antenna communicates with low and medium earth orbit satellites. The antenna includes a plurality of micro-strip elements arranged about an axis and positioned to illuminate upper elevation angles. The micro-strip elements are perpendicular to each other and are oriented toward the horizon at 90 degree increments. Furthermore, the micro-strip elements are tilted at a 50 degree angle. A quadrifilar helix is positioned at the center of the micro-strip elements and positioned to illuminate lower elevation angles. The micro-strip elements generate an omni-directional field pattern in the azimuth plane. The quadrifilar helix generates a high-gain, narrow beam-width field pattern that is also omni-directional in the azimuth plane. The antenna provides improved immunity to specular ground reflections by limiting reception of signals below a threshold elevation angle. Also, the antenna provides continuous, uninterrupted communications by eliminating 'dead' period associated with conventional parabolic dish antennas.

Compact antenna for low and medium earth orbit satellite communication

A portable phone unit for use in satellite communication systems has a vertically correcting antenna module pivotally secured to the handset for free rotation about a pivot axis. The module contains a mechanism, such as a gravitational counterweight for urging the module to pivot into a predetermined vertical orientation regardless of the handset orientation. An antenna projects from the module in a direction which is vertically upright when the module is in its predetermined vertical orientation. A mast mounted antenna module can also be used to take advantage of dissimilar antenna segment weights for multiple frequency antennas. As the handset is moved into an angular orientation, the module pivots under the weight of the counterweight, or a portion of the antenna itself, until the antenna is oriented vertically.
