A radiation analysis system/method that automatically optimizes the efficiency calibration of a counting system based on benchmark data and variable parameters associated with radiation source/sensor/environment (RSSE) combinations is disclosed. The system/method bifurcates RSSE context (SSEC) model parameters into WELL-KNOWN (fixed) parameters (WNP) and NOT-WELL-KNOWN (variable) parameters (NWP). The NWP have associated lower/upper limit values (LULV) and a shape distribution (LUSD) describing NWP characteristics. SSEC models are evaluated using randomized statistical NWP variations or by using smart routines that perform a focused search within the LULV/LUSD to generate model calibration values (MCV) and calibration uncertainty values (UCV) describing the overall SSEC efficiencies. Sensor measurements using the MCV/UCV generate a measurement value and uncertainty estimation value. An exemplary embodiment optimizes geometry models of radiation sources by benchmarking with respect to measurement data from spectroscopy detectors and/or dose rate detectors.

Radiation analysis system and method

Methods of detecting radioactivity in dynamic situations in which radiation is detected from large and small radioactive objects with at least one radiation detector as the objects pass through the field of view and combinations are made from those measurements which are either adjacent in time, from multiple detectors, or at different energies. An elevated signal is reported when an analysis of the various combinations shows an elevated signal in anyone combination. Small amounts of radioactivity can be detected even in the presence of large amounts.

Maximum entropy signal detection method

The method of analyzing the measured radiation spectra to estimate the identified nuclide activities using a designated efficiency calibration based on average expected geometry and using spectral characteristics to flag significant shielding that would otherwise skew said nuclide activities (FIG.). And providing an estimation of activity correction factor or attenuation factor for each affected nuclide ().

Shielded source detection and activity correction system

A system for combining the spectral data from multiple ionizing radiation detectors of different types and having different photopeak energy resolutions. First, baseline estimation is performed on each spectral histogram separately, discerning peak regions from underlying continuum using respective peak response functions. All spectra are subsequently rebinned to the same energy calibration and the peak spectra are convolved to produce a single convolution spectrum. All peak counts are redistributed locally according to the convolution spectrum in energy regions proportional to respective local energy resolution. The summation of these redistributed peak spectra can then be analyzed as a single spectrum using a common photopeak response and energy calibration. This process can be embodied in software or firmware. A preferred hybrid system might include a combination of lower resolution, higher efficiency detectors and higher resolution, lower efficiency detectors.

In a preferred embodiment, a method of identifying nuclides, including the steps of: determining spectral continuum via a peak erosion process to render a residual peak spectrum; filtering a standard nuclide library specified by a user to select candidate nuclides; simultaneously fitting calibrations and activities of selected candidate nuclides from the standard library to the peak spectrum using a standard least squares method; calculating statistical significances of optimized nuclide activities and determining shape correlations between optimized candidate nuclide peak spectra and measured peak spectrum with alternative candidates subtracted; and identifying and providing activities of nuclides determined to have sufficiently significant activities and sufficient shape correlations.

In a preferred embodiment, an automatic gain adjust method for radiation spectrometers, including: placing a calibration source emitting known energies at a radiation detector; acquiring a spectrum of the known energies; automatically analyzing the spectrum and comparing the spectrum with the known energies; automatically adjusting gain of an amplifier of the spectrum until peaks of the spectrum are in correct channels.
