Pultruded frames for an adjustable bed are described herein. The pultruded frames may include various components such as connection/joining and reinforcing structures. The various components and frame parts may be combined in multiple configurations to form light weight and strong adjustable bed frames.

A system and method for calibrating one or more sensing features for a furniture item detection is provided. More particularly, embodiments relate to determining a first noise state associated with an environment of the furniture item based on a first measured noise received from one or more sensors associated with the furniture item. A first baseline noise level for the furniture item can be generated based on filtering the first noise state associated with the environment of the furniture item. A second noise state associated with the environment of the furniture item can be determined based on a second measured noise received from the one or more sensors associated with the furniture item. A second baseline noise level for the furniture item can be generated based on filtering the second noise state associated with the environment of the furniture item. The first baseline noise level can then be adjusted to the second baseline noise level.

Calibration of detection features for automated furniture

A system and method for incorporating presence-sensing technology into furniture is provided. More particularly, the invention relates to incorporating a conductive medium into the periphery of a furniture item, such as an adjustable bed, for detecting the presence of a user or other body. The bed includes a mattress with a covering material and a tape edge surrounding the perimeter of the mattress. A capacitive wire is coupled the tape edge, and is adapted to have a voltage based on proximity of an object to the capacitive wire. The bed also includes a processor coupled to the capacitive wire. The processor receives information provided by the capacitive wire, determines when a change in voltage satisfies a threshold, and indicates whether presence is detected. Based on a determination of presence, or lack of presence, a variety of corresponding features of the adjustable bed may be activated.

Capacitive sensing for furniture

A system and method for incorporating occupancy-detecting technology into furniture is provided. More particularly, the invention relates to detecting occupancy in a recliner using a sinuous wire detection array incorporated into a seat. Further embodiments of the invention are directed to a system and method for incorporating capacitance detection technology with one or more conductive features of a recliner mechanism. In some aspects, a sensor is provided based on coupling one or more conductive features to a control component of the capacitance detector control component. A controller may determine the corresponding response based on occupancy detection and/or presence detection. A processor may receive information regarding changes in capacitance and determines when a change in voltage satisfies a threshold. Based on a determination of occupancy and/or presence, a variety of corresponding features of the adjustable recliner may be activated.

More particularly, the invention relates to direct-connect device, system, and method for determining presence with respect to an automated furniture item, such as a recliner mechanism. More particularly, the invention relates to detecting occupancy using a detection pad coupled a portion of a bed. The detection pad may include an aluminized polymer material, a metalized and/or conductive fabric, an aluminum sheet, a metal screen, an aluminum tape, a wire grid, or other metalized material or fabric. A controller determines the corresponding response based on single-occupancy or dual-occupancy detection by one or more detection pads. A processor receives information regarding changes in capacitance and determines when a change in voltage satisfies a threshold. Based on a determination of occupancy, or lack thereof, a variety of corresponding features of the adjustable bed may be activated.

Characterization and calibration for automated furniture

A system and method for incorporating presence-sensing technology into furniture is provided. More particularly, the invention relates to detecting presence using a metal, adjustable bed frame. The bed frame is pulsed with a voltage to provide a charge, against which capacitance is measured. A controller determines the corresponding response based on presence detection by the frame. Conductive bushings may also be used to measure capacitance using the bed frame. In further embodiments, capacitance is measured by a foil tape surrounding a perimeter of the adjustable bed. The foil tape has a voltage based on proximity of an object to the tape, and may be embedded with a capacitive wire. A processor receives information regarding changes in capacitance and determines when a change in voltage satisfies a threshold. Based on a determination of presence, or lack of presence, a variety of corresponding features of the adjustable bed may be activated.

A mattress bucket retention mechanism and device for securing a mattress on an automated bed is provided. Embodiments of the invention relate to an integrated mattress bucket retention mechanism for an adjustable bed. In one embodiment, the mattress bucket retention mechanism secures a mattress against articulating deckboard panels of an adjustable bed. In other embodiments, the mattress bucket retention mechanism provides a replaceable top surface for covering a mattress. Further, the mattress bucket retention mechanism may serve as a protective surround for the mattress. Embodiments of the mattress bucket retention mechanism include a deckboard having a deckboard edge, a mattress wrap having side panels and a top panel, and a zipper closure mechanism, which are used to create an interior compartment for securing a mattress.

In embodiments, a communication protocol enables a remote device to wirelessly control a generic device wirelessly coupled to a control component of an automated furniture item. The remote device may control features of the generic device based on wireless communication with the control component. In some embodiments, the remote device receives a user environment selection, which is communicated to the control component of the automated furniture item. The automated furniture item then communicates at least a portion of the received command to a corresponding generic device, according to the settings of the selected user environment. In further embodiments, an occupancy detection indication for the automated furniture item may result in a change in one or more settings corresponding to the user environment, as communicated to the generic device(s) by the control component.

In embodiments, the replaceable basecover mechanism includes a basecover border having a plurality of border panels, a center panel coupled to the plurality of border panels, and at least one stretch panel coupled to at least one of the plurality of border panels. The stretch panels include at least one j-shaped upholstery channel coupled to the stretch panel, and the j-shaped upholstery channels are configured to removably couple the basecover border to a deckboard of an adjustable furniture item. Additionally, the deckboard may include a locking channel configured to couple to the j-shaped upholstery channels.
