For intraluminal ultrasound probes, the transducer is divided into multiple segments. The segments are connected in a way that allows them to slide relative to each other. This sliding arrangement allows for the transducer to be used in two different apertures at different times while in the patient. One aperture is shaped for insertion of the probe through a limited space, and the other aperture forms an array with a larger elevation extent, allowing greater quality imaging along the elevation dimension.

For intraluminal ultrasound probes, two long-thin arrays (e.g., 1D arrays) are provided in the intraluminal ultrasound probe for bi-plane imaging. The arrays are rotatable relative to each other so that during insertion the arrays align to be long and thin, allowing the shaft of the probe to be narrow. For bi-plane imaging after insertion, one array is rotated relative to the other array, defining two non-parallel imaging planes.

An ultrasound imaging probe () includes a communications interface (), including one or more ports (-), corresponding to one or more different communication protocols, for communication with ultrasound consoles. The probe () also includes a controller () that configures the probe () for communication with an ultrasound console () over a port (-) based on a communication between the communications interface () and a communications interface () of the console ().

A sound manipulation system is provided. The sound manipulation system includes a flow chamber arranged and disposed to receive a fluid containing a particulate and provide in-line sound wave manipulation of at least a portion of the particulate from the fluid, and a transducer positioned to facilitate the in-line sound wave manipulation within the flow chamber. The flow chamber includes at least a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being self-aligned and secured to the second portion.

A swing apparatus is adapted to receive the installation of a variety of infant holding devices, such as portable infant seats and bassinets. The infant holding device can be desirably installed and removed from the swing apparatus. In certain embodiments, the support frame of the swing apparatus can be provided with a detector adapted to provide information about the installed infant holding device, in particular an identified type thereof. According to this information, the output of a motion drive unit that is operable to swing the infant holding device can be adjusted to set a suitable swing motion.

Two-dimensional transducer arrays used for one-, two- and three-dimensional medical diagnostic ultrasonic imaging. The transducer arrays have transducer elements that are arranged in a non-rectangular, and preferably hexagonal grid. In a preferred embodiment, the transducer array has hexagonally shaped transducer elements. The transducer arrays may be fabricated as single or multiple layer structures. Sparse transducer arrays may be fabricated in a hexagonal grid by connecting selected transducer elements to the imaging system. Also, the transducer array may comprise random, vernier and spiral arrays fabricated in a hexagonal grid.

A micro-instrument suitable for property imaging in a body is less than one millimeter in each dimension. The micro-instrument includes a base having a first wall and a second wall, the second wall substantially circumscribing the first wall, and a lid connected with the base to form a cavity and the lid being temporarily deformable. Optionally, the lid can include a cantilever that is deformable. Also optionally, an electronic circuit can be attached with the micro-instrument. The micro-instrument can also be substantially spherical. An observable property of the micro-instrument varies as a function of a physiological property of the body.

Method and apparatus for diagnostic medical information gathering, hyperthermia treatment, or directed gene therapy

An ultrasonic transducer array for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic energy in multiple two-dimensional imaging planes. The ultrasonic energy in the imaging planes is focused in elevation by the curvature of the transducer array. An imaging plane is selected from a plurality of available imaging planes by electronic switching. Each imaging plane when selected is positioned at a known angle, different from all other imaging planes, due to the known curvature of the transducer array, and the known dimensions of the transducer elements.
