A gateway enables communications between a personal area network, such as a Zigbee network, and an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The gateway includes a first interface device for connecting to the personal area network, a second interface device for connecting to the IP network, and a gateway controller. In one embodiment, the gateway controller allocates ports on an IP interface to one or more clients in said personal area network, stores a routing table in memory for relating said clients in said personal area network with their corresponding ports, and transfers messages between said personal area network clients and said IP network based on entries in said routing table. In other embodiments, the gateway may function in conjunction with a gateway proxy.

Systems for providing location determination information to an assisted location service associated with a wireless communication network include a satellite positioning system receiver that generates a set of first format location information based on measurements of signals transmitted from positioning system satellites. A conversion circuit of the system, separate from the satellite positioning system receiver, is configured to receive the set of first format location information from the satellite positioning system receiver and to convert the set of first format location information to a second format, different from the first format to provide the location determination information. The system further includes a transmitter configured to transmit the location determination information to the assisted location service over the wireless communication network. Methods and computer program products for providing location determination information to an assisted location service associated with a wireless communication network are also provided.

A system and method of optimizing the output power of a power amplifier to maintain satisfactory RF response under varying power amplifier operating conditions. The operating conditions include operating temperature, supply voltage, and operating frequency. Existing sensors monitor the aforementioned operating conditions. An application within the wireless device containing the power amplifier continuously or periodically logs the current operating conditions and finds them in a look-up table stored internally. The look-up table is comprised of empirically derived maximum sustainable power output levels for each operating condition. Once the current operating conditions are matched to a set in the table, current power amplifier power output is reset, if necessary, to the maximum sustainable power output defined in the table.

Intelligent RF power control for wireless modem devices

An incoming call alert system for use with a portable communication device is disclosed as including an accessory unit physically separate from the portable communication device for providing an alerting signal, a wireless link between the portable communication device and the accessory unit, and circuitry electrically connected to operating circuitry of the portable communication device for providing a message exclusively to the accessory unit over the wireless link when an incoming call is received by the portable communication device, the message causing the accessory unit to activate the alerting signal. The circuitry further includes an interface for maintaining and terminating the electrical connection between the circuitry and the operating circuitry of the portable communication device, a transceiver for transmitting messages exclusively to and receiving messages exclusively from the accessory unit over the wireless link, and control logic for monitoring receipt of an incoming call by the portable communication device and activating the transceiver to transmit the message in response thereto. The accessory unit further includes a power source, a transceiver for receiving messages exclusively from and transmitting messages exclusively to the circuitry over the wireless link, a transducer which provides the alerting signal upon activation, and control circuitry for activating the transducer upon receipt of the message by the receiver via the wireless link.

Methods and apparatus for preventing tampering with memory in an electronic device, such as a cellular telephone, are disclosed. An electronic device having a memory and a processing means contains logic that is used to perform a one-way hash calculation on the device's memory contents whereby an audit hash value, or signature, of such contents is derived. The audit hash value is compared to a an authenticated valid hash value derived from authentic memory contents. A difference between the audit and valid hash values can be indicative of memory tampering. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, electronic device memory contents can be updated by a data transfer device that is authenticated before being permitted access to the memory contents. Data transfer device authentication involves the use of a public/private key encryption scheme. When the data transfer device interfaces with a electronic device and requests memory access, a process to authenticate the data transfer device is initiated.

System for preventing electronic memory tampering

A recyclable cellular telephone is disclosed having an inner rigid cellular electronics supporting frame member surrounded by a replaceable outer cover. The telephone is acquired having a limited period of use. The electronics of the telephone operate to disable the telephone following expiration of the period of use. Following expiration of the period of use, the telephone is returned for refurbishment where the outer cover is stripped and replaced and the electronics tested before being recycled with a new period of use for an another acquisition. The cellular network supporting telephone operation also monitors the period of use, disabling telephone access to the network following expiration. Directory numbers are selectively assigned to the recyclable telephones from a pool of available numbers, with assigned numbers returned to the pool after expiration of a predetermined period or telephone deactivation for re-use by another recyclable telephone. The recyclable telephones are activated and deactivated in a number of ways, including through the use of a separate activation and deactivation station which communicates with the telephones over a radio frequency communications link.

Recyclable cellular telephone and method and apparatus for supporting

A cellular radiotelephone which includes a programmable memory location which is programmed with a unique initial identification number is remotely programmed by providing the initial identification number to a cellular system, and establishing a page from the cellular system to the radiotelephone using the initial identification number to identify the radiotelephone. Data, including a mobile identification number, is transmitted during the page, and the programmable memory location is programmed with the mobile identification number. Accordingly, the radiotelephone can be conveniently programmed after purchase from a remote location. In addition, the initial identification number may comprise predetermined digits chosen from the electronic serial number.
