A chopper mechanism for providing a fiber to a fluid at an oilfield. The chopper mechanism may be employed to process the fiber from an uncut form to a cut form in order to provide a mixture of the fluid and the fiber with flowback inhibiting character. Techniques of employing the chopper mechanism may be utilized at the site of an oilfield for applications such as fracturing, cementing, and drilling. Additionally, the chopper mechanism itself may be made available as a large high capacity chopper assembly, or a smaller handheld chopper gun for slower rate fiber supply operations.

Use of a chopper mechanism to add fibers to a well

A novel apparatus is disclosed which comprises: The new apparatus is particularly useful as a horizontal flow hydration tank to prepare aqueous viscous fluids for use as well treatment fluids. Hydratable polymers can be hydrated rapidly and consistently in real time. The apparatus is less complex mechanically and operationally than the compartmentalized vertical-flow tanks of the prior art, and it can be constructed as a mobile unit.

Horizontal-flow hydration apparatus

A valve apparatus that has a longitudinal axis therethrough comprises a valve seat member, a valve closure member, a fluid flow path, and a resilient valve insert member. The valve seat member comprises a hollow bore and a first frustoconical contact surface that has an inner perimeter and an outer perimeter. The valve closure member comprises a valve body and a second frustoconical contact surface that is adapted to seal against the first frustoconical contact surface in a strike face area. The valve closure member is movable along the longitudinal axis of the valve apparatus. The fluid flow path extends through the bore of the valve seat member and between the valve seat member and the valve closure member. This fluid flow path is closed when the second frustoconical contact surface is sealed against the first frustoconical contact surface.

Valve apparatus

Low density fibrous materials such as carbon fibers are readily added and dispersed into a liquid such as a fracturing fluid liquid by injecting the fibers into the liquid adjacent to the liquid-gas interface at the surface of the liquid. The fibrous materials are preferably compacted to a uniform bulk density in a container in which all the gas in the compacted fibers has been displaced by a liquid. A crimped cartridge having a piston to discharge the compacted fibrous material into the liquid is preferred.
