A system is provided that includes a combustion system having a plurality of jets; a spatial monitoring system with a plurality of sensors disposed in a spatial grid within or downstream from the combustion system; and a control system configured to adjust a forcing frequency of at least one fluid jet in the plurality of fluid jets in response to sensor feedback from the spatial monitoring system.

A method of optimizing operation of a fossil fuel fired boiler includes, in an exemplary embodiment, providing a plurality of sensors positioned in different spatial positions within the fossil fuel fired boiler. The method also includes recording sensor outputs, identifying spatial combustion anomalies indicated by sensor outputs, identifying burners responsible for the spatial combustion anomalies, and adjusting air flow of responsible burners to alleviate the spatial combustion anomalies.

Method and a system for capturing mercury in a flue gas are provided. The method includes partially oxidizing a carbonaceous solid fuel in a gasifier such that a thermally activated carbon-containing solid sorbent and gaseous gasification products are generated wherein the gasifier is proximate to a combustion system for combusting a mercury containing fuel. The method further includes storing the generated thermally activated carbon-containing solid sorbent proximate to the combustion system and combusting a mercury containing fuel in a combustion zone of the combustion system wherein mercury released during combustion is entrained in flue gas generated by the combustion. The method also includes injecting the thermally activated solid sorbent in the flue gas downstream of the combustion zone and absorbing at least a portion of the entrained mercury on the thermally activated solid sorbent.

Method and system for reducing mercury emissions in flue gas

A system for removing mercury from combustion gas. The system includes a combustion device, a stack, and a duct system that couples the combustion device to the stack. The system further comprises an injection system that is coupled to the duct system. The injection system injects sorbents including alkali-based sorbents and carbon-based sorbents into the duct system.

A method for reducing an amount of mercury in flue gases generated by the combustion of coal is provided. A method to reduce mercury in gas emissions from the combustion of low rank coal in a combustion system including: combusting coal having a low chlorine content in the combustion system, wherein elemental mercury (Hg) is released in the flue gas produced by the combustion of the low rank coal; releasing chlorine into the flue gas by combusting a coal having a high chlorine in the combustion system; reacting the elemental mercury and released chlorine in the flue gas to oxidize the mercury; adsorbing at least a portion of the oxidized mercury generated by the combustion of the coal with an adsorbent in the flue gas, and collecting the adsorbent with the oxidized mercury in a combustion waste treatment system.
