A method of improving absorbency of air laid bonded fibrous webs and the products resulting therefrom, the preferred method comprising the step of imprinting at least one surface of the fibrous web between a pair of cylindrical rolls under a pressure of at least 100 pounds/lineal inch, the compacted area of each imprinted web surface being at least 40%, preferably at least 50%, of the total imprinted surface. In the preferred embodiment of the method, the fibrous web is first wetted with water, the imprinting step then being conducted with imprinting means heated to about 140.degree. to about 180.degree. C. The products obtained have densified zones underlying the compacted areas, the density thereof being at least 0.1 gm./cc., which zones enhance absorbency as compared to unimprinted webs by at least 25%. The preferred webs provided by the method are imprinted with a grid-like pattern, said pattern preventing nesting of individual sheets in product rolls and containers.

Patterned dry laid fibrous web products of enhanced absorbency

An air laid fibrous web product of enhanced absorbency and method of making same having a basis weight of between about 8 to about 50 pounds per ream, and a bulk of at least 0.40 mils per pound per ream, the web product comprising a multiplicity of papermaking fibers distributed randomly in the form of a web, an adhesive material, preferably a latex, essentially permeating said web of randomly distributed fibers and upon curing bonding adjacent fibers, the adhesive material representing between about 15 to about 30% of the basis weight of the web product and between about 0.1 to about 5.0 by weight of a hydrophile, said hydrophile substantially coating the bonded fibers. The hydrophile is applied to the web as an aqueous solution downstream of the bonding station, either in an immersion or spray treating step.

Incorporation of a hydrophile in fibrous webs to enhance absorbency

A highly effective photoinitiator for cationic polymerization of monomer formulations is prepared by reacting bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl] sulfide bis-halide wherein halide is chloride or bromide in an aqueous solution with a compound having the formula T MF.sub.6 wherein M is one of phosphorus, antimony or arsenic and T is hydrogen or a metal whose halide salt is water soluble. The two compounds react in the aqueous medium to produce a precipitate which includes at least about 50 percent by weight bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl] sulfide bis-MF.sub.6, and this precipitate may be recovered and dried for utilization without further purification if so desired. Purification may be effected by dissolving the dried product in an organic solvent, cooling the solvent to precipitate the impurities, and thereafter recovering relatively pure bis-[d-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl] sulfide bis-MF.sub.6 by chilling the solvent solution to form a precipitate, and then separating and drying the precipitate. The preferred compounds are those wherein the substituent M is phosphorus so that the product comprises bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl] sulfide bis-hexafluorophosphate. The cationic polymerization processes utilize the photoinitiator in an amount equal to about 0.5-6.0 percent by weight of the monomer therein.

Method for producing bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonic)phenyl]sulfide

A method for the high speed coating of various substrates utilizes an epoxy composition containing a radiation-sensitive catalyst precursor which will decompose upon exposure to electromagnetic radiation to provide a Lewis acid effective to induce cationic polymerization of the epoxy composition. The formulation does not require any special epoxy monomeric materials or accelerators and is stable until so exposed. Subsequent to applying the formulation to the substrate, the coating is exposed to electromagnetic radiation and a controlled temperature of 50.degree.-90.degree. C. is maintained in the coating for a limited period of time to effect polymerization of the formulation to a tack free surface condition within a period of less than 30 seconds. Maintenance at the elevated temperature following initiation of irradiation may be for a period of as little as 0.5 second.

Printed and varnished surfaces are provided by depositing a base film or printing on a substrate and depositing, wet-on-wet, a protective varnish or top coat after which the multilayers are exposed to an energy source, preferably to electromagnetic radiation, to simultaneously cure the varnish and ink on said substrate.

Method for producing multilayered coated substrate

Photoinitiator-free inks and a method of producing printed and varnished surfaces are provided by depositing a base film or printing on a substrate and depositing, wet-on-wet, a protective varnish or top coat after which the multilayers are exposed to an energy source, preferably to electromagnetic radiation, to simultaneously cure the varnish and ink on said substrate.

Photoinitiator free inks and method

A blend of epoxide materials is provided which, although essentially free of volatile solvents, is liquid and tractable for coating and related applications at or near room temperature. The epoxide materials include an epoxy prepolymer of the type of glycidyl-bisphenol A resins, epoxidized novolaks, polyglycidyl ethers, and alicyclic diepoxides, blended with a bis(epoxycycloalkyl) ester and in many cases also with a low viscosity monoepoxide in limited proportions. The compositions preferably include additionally a cationic polymerization initiator, preferably a radiation-sensitive catalyst precursor, and epoxide polymers are produced by coating such compositions on a substrate, followed by application of energy, through heating or preferably through irradiation, to effect substantial polymerization of the epoxidic materials of the coating.
