A length of tubular material of unitary construction is formed into the approximate shape of a human dental arch for use as an orthodontic arch wire. The tubular material is composed of a super-elastic nickel titanium alloy which may also have shape memory. The cross-sectional shape of the arch wire tube can be round, oval, square, or rectangular. The preferred thickness of the tube is preferably 20 percent of its outside diameter and the tube may be perforated to alter its performance.

Tubular orthodontic arch wire

An alarm system sensor () monitoring movement of an object (D) and placing the system into alarm when the object moves more than a predetermined distance from a predetermined position. First and second reed switches () are located in a predetermined orientation relative to each other and in tandem to the object. Bias magnets () are used with the reed switches. A magnet () is movable with the object and produces a force simultaneously sensed by both reed switches. This force maintains both reed switches in a state keeping the alarm system in a non-alarm condition so long as the object substantially remains in its predetermined position. The object, when it moves, moves toward one of the reed switches and away from the other reed switch. Movement of the object more than the predetermined distance results in the force sensed by one of the reed switches increasing and the force sensed by the other reed switch decreasing. Either change in sensed force activates the appropriate reed switch causing the alarm system to go into alarm.

Alarm sensor

A sensor alignment tool () for use in the installation of sensors (S), particularly a pair of sensors such as are used in a security system or the like. Once a proper location for the sensors is identified, a mounting base () for one of the sensors is located adjacent a surface where the sensors are to be installed. The tool is then employed with two sets () of adjustment rods () to properly locate and align the sensor mounting base for the other sensor. Tolerant mounting washers are used to mount both bases to the surfaces to which they are to be attached. Once the mounting bases are properly aligned, the tool is removed and the sensors installed in their respective mounting bases.

Sensor alignment tool

An orthodontic interarch device includes a recurve bend located adjacent a shepherd's hook or loop-type attachment that makes the anterior end of the device rotate downwardly rather than upwardly when force is applied. As the person's jaws move, a cam action against the archwire is produced that does not allow the hook or loop attachment end of the device to move above the horizontal plane of the bite as the connection rotates. The recurve bend should be a minimum of 120 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the interarch device in the backward direction. As the degree of this backward curvature approaches 210 degrees, the recurve bend further positions a hook attachment pivot point below axis of the body of the interarch device in the vertical plane. This further prevents the appliance from rotating into the bite.

Anti-rotational interarch orthodontic device

An orthodontic appliance for moving the upper teeth relative to lower teeth in either a backward or a forward direction contains a resilient body coupled to at least one rotating end portion that allows the device to spin freely. Since the ends of the device spin freely, the stress of twisting on the flexible portion will be eliminated thus reducing breakage. Furthermore, the need for a different right and left device is eliminated. In addition, the end portion may also be telescoping in order to make the device expandable, thus allowing the patient to open his/her mouth more fully which results in the additional benefit of less appliance breakage. Also, because the device is expandable, the flexible portion can be made one size that will result in a more consistent force output and reduce the number of parts needed to manufacture the appliance.

Telescoping flexible bite jumping device

A workstation (106) for a security system (10) includes a first video display (602a) displaying status information of video equipment (22) used at the premises to perform the surveillance. A second video display (602b) displays a plurality of thumbnail images of an intrusion scene. A third video display (602c) displays a snapshot image from which one of said the thumbnail images is derived. The snapshot is displayed upon the thumbnail image derived from the snapshot being selected by a workstation operator. A fourth video display (602d) displays data relating to the premises, identifying the location on the premises where the intrusion occurred, who should be contacted about the intrusion, etc.

Workstation for video security system

A video security system (10) monitors a premise (F) to detect unwanted intrusions onto the premises. A plurality of cameras (22) located about the premise supply video images of scenes to a processor (12) located which processes the images to detection motion in a scene and classify the source of the motion. Only if the source is determined be one of a predetermined class of causes, is an indication provided to an alarm unit (16). The alarm unit, which is also connected to a plurality of conventional sensors (S1-S3) is responsive to the indication to cause the processor to transmit authenticated video images of the scene in which the motion is detected to a central station (CS). There, a video server (102), in conjunction with an alarm computer (104), enables the images to be displayed at a selected workstation (106) for viewing by an operator (O). Besides video, audio and relevant site data is also made available to the operator at the workstation. The operator's responsibility is to alert appropriate authorities. By not providing an indication of an intrusion unless the intrusion has been previously confirmed on-site, false and unwanted alarms are prevented without reducing but the probability of detecting an intrusion.

Advanced video security system

A security system (S) monitors displacement between a first unit (20) mounted on a door or window frame, and a second unit (21) mounted in the door or window, adjacent the first unit. An analog signal (Sx) created at one of the units is monitored at the other unit. A least one characteristic of the signal provides an indication as to the relative position of the units, and a nominal signal characteristic value represents a nominal position of one unit relative to the other unit for a predetermined set of conditions. On at least one side of the value is a range of signal characteristic values representing a range of acceptable motion through which one unit may move relative to the other unit without putting the system into an alarm condition. The total range of signal characteristic values representing the acceptable range of motion defines a window whose size is maintained so long as the one unit moves relative to the other unit within the window. But, if the one unit moves relative to the other unit outside the window, such movement putting the system into alarm, the size of the window is changed. The range of acceptable motion now defined by the window is a second range different from the first range. The window maintains this second range until the one unit moves to a position within the second range of acceptable motion so to take the system out of alarm.

Multiple movable windows for security system setup and operation

An alarm system includes a controller (20), a plurality of transponders (23-26), and a transducer (50) connected to one of the transponders (23). A voltage reference which is preferably earth ground is established for the entire alarm system. A local loop comprises a pair of electrical conductors (72, 73) connecting the transducer and transponder. The transponder includes a comparator (70, 80, 80-82) having a fixed reference input and a second input which is the voltage level on the local loop. If a ground fault or other abnormal condition occurs, this is sensed by the comparator and an indication provided a loop status portion (60a) of the transducer. The controller includes a communications module (27) by which each transponder is addressed, and the transponder includes an output response portion (60b) by which the transponder identifies itself to the controller as the transponder at which the ground fault or other abnormal condition has occurred.

Apparatus and method for detecting undesirable connections in a system

A housing assembly (20) for protecting electronic components. An enclosure (21) is open at one end (22). Electronic components are housed in the enclosure. A bung member (25) is insertable into the open end of the enclosure to seal the enclosure. The member defines a channel (27) and a spreader element (28) is insertable into the channel. The spreader element is formed to cause the bung member to expand upon insertion of the spreader to seal the enclosure against moisture and contaminants.

Method and apparatus for sealing, on a non-permanent basis, a housing

An orthodontic spring is comprised of a wave spring made of shape memory alloy that consists of a wire tightly looped, once or many times back on itself, side-to-side in figure '8'fashion. After winding, the spring is heat treated into this position. In its relaxed state, the bends of the spring form peaks and valleys which lie in parallel planes at an angle to the line of force between attachment loops at opposite end points of the spring. Portions of the wire between successive peaks and valleys overlap other portions between other peaks and valleys when the wire is relaxed. When extended, the elements of the spring lie in a longitudinal plane along its line of force. The spring is particularly suited to attachment between closely spaced points, such as brackets affixed to adjacent teeth.

Folded orthodontic spring

An orthodontic appliance having improved devices for interconnecting the braces associated with a patient's upper and lower teeth. Each connecting device generally takes the form of a unitary, thin band of material that can be connected between the braces associated with the patient's upper and lower teeth to achieve the forces that are desired for a particular treatment. The connecting device generally includes a body having integral end portions that are preferably rounded for purposes of comfort. Each end portion includes an attachment for connection to the braces associated with the patient's teeth. Preferably, at least one of the attachments of each connecting device is keyed so that upon its connection to the braces, swivelling of the connecting device is effectively precluded without compromising desired movements of the connecting device relative to the orthodontic appliance and the patient's mouth. As a result, interaction between the connecting devices and the patient's jaws, lips and cheeks is minimized, and breakage is effectively precluded. The connecting device is capable of being formed of a material that can produce forces, upon use of the connecting device, that are sufficiently small to produce desired movements of the teeth without producing undesired movements of the patient's jaws.

Orthodontic device

An orthodontic bite jumping device includes a metal cylinder for receiving a telescoping plunger, for attachment to and between the orthodontic braces fixed to a patient's upper and lower teeth to achieve desired movement in otherwise conventional fashion. This appliance is at each end provided with connectors which slidingly interact with the orthodontic braces. A spring is attached between the cylinder and the plunger in a manner which causes the application of relatively consistent pushing forces to the teeth, to achieve desired tooth and jaw movements while buffering the relatively heavy forces that are produced so as not to cause damage to the orthodontic braces or to the appliances which interconnect them. Such forces are applied to and between the orthodontic braces in a substantially horizontal direction, avoiding the application of major forces in a vertical direction as was characteristic of prior bite jumping devices. The bite jumping device is further provided with a stop mechanism for preventing separation of the telescoping elements when the patient's mouth is fully opened, while otherwise ensuring free movement of the patient's jaws.

An alarm system including a sensor for providing an output signal upon sensing a given condition, an alarm unit for providing an alarm signal on receipt of the output signal, and a timer, coupled between the sensor and the alarm unit, which is reset to a preset count each time it receives an indication that the sensor has detected the given condition where the timer is allowed to count down from a preset count while no sensor is providing output signals and an arming signal is generated by the timer when it completes the countdown.

An orthodontic appliance having improved devices for interconnecting the braces associated with a patient's upper and lower teeth. Each connecting device generally takes the form of a unitary, thin band of material that can be connected between the braces associated with the patient's upper and lower teeth to achieve the forces that are desired for a particular treatment. The connecting device has a body that is substantially flat and rectangular, with bent end portions that are preferably rounded for purposes of comfort. Each end portion includes an aperture for attachment to the braces associated with the patient's teeth. Preferably, at least one of the apertures of each connecting device is keyed so that upon its attachment to the braces, swivelling of the connecting device is effectively precluded without compromising desired movements of the connecting device relative to the orthodontic appliance and the patient's mouth. As a result, interaction between the connecting devices and the patient's jaws, lips and cheeks is minimized, and breakage is effectively precluded. The connecting device is capable of being formed of a material that can produce forces, upon use of the connecting device, that are sufficiently small to produce desired movements of the teeth without producing undesired movements of the patient's jaws.
