An apparatus for removing suspect breast tissue which includes a penetrating member in the form of a stylet with a tapered front end that can be guided along a localization guide wire. The apparatus also including a first cutting device in the form of a cannula slidingly engaged with the stylet. A driving assembly is in driving engagement with the cannula and, upon activation, potential energy stored in the driving assembly acts to drive the forward end of the cannula forward of the stylet's forward end so as to define a core cavity. A second cutting device which includes a garret wire having a looped section positioned within a recess at the forward end of the cannula is also provided. The driving assembly preferably also acts to rotate the cannula with a cam arrangement such that the cannula rotates when being driven forward. The garret wire is also attached to the rotating cannula such that the wire is drawn up to a stop bead just at the time the cannula reaches its maximum forward extension and further rotation of the cannula results in the contraction of the wire loop and a cutting of a core sample of suspect breast tissue.

Method and device for precutaneous excisional breast biopsy

A method for percutaneous excisional breast biopsy and a percutaneous excisional breast biopsy device (PEBB device). In one variation of the method, the following steps are conducted: locating a breast lesion by radiographic techniques; positioning and implanting a localizing needle distal to said breast lesion, said localizing needle containing a hooked guide wire; positioning and implanting said hooked guide wire distal to said breast lesion; making a small incision on the surface of the breast at the point where said localizing needle enters the breast; passing a PEBB device over said localizing needle; inserting said PEBB device through said incision; further inserting said PEBB device and pushing aside the breast tissue; positioning said PEBB device to the desired location proximate said lesion; further inserting into the breast a first cutting surface of said PEBB device to the desired location distant said lesion; manipulating a second cutting surface of said PEBB device and cutting the portion of the breast tissue distal to said hooked guide wire to separate a portion of said breast tissue containing all of said lesion; and removing the PEBB device containing said lesion.

Device for percutaneous excisional breast biopsy

A method of using a protective apparatus with an intravenous system and especially an implanted intravenous needle assembly or a Y-junction of a piggy back intravenous system. The protective apparatus includes a protective sheath having an open end and a second end suitable for connection with a fluid introduction source. The sheath includes a slot along its lowest surface and can include a needle extending within a hollow interior defined by the sheath. The sheath features two curved runner sections or a pair of wing-shaped runners which extend from a channel section defining a portion of the slot. The curved runner sections and wing-shaped runners allow for easy insertion of a needle into a taped receptive port of an implanted intravenous needle assembly. An alternate embodiment features two slits with or without an additional channel/elongated aperture combination. The two slits allow for easy insertion of a needle into a taped receptive port while the channel/elongated aperture combination allows for use of the protective sheath with a Y-junction of an intravenous system. An additional embodiment features a needle assembly with protective guard that can be easily connected within the interior of the protective sheath.

Method for using a protective sheath in an intravenous assembly

A method of utilizing an apparatus of the type comprising a vial container hazardous material in the vial container in a condition requiring a diluent to be mixed therewith to form the liquid solution, and an assemblage carried by the vial container for providing (1) a sealed medicament chamber within the vial container within which the hazardous material is disposed, (2) a filter vented control chamber and (3) a sealed variable volume control chamber between the vented control chamber and the medicament chamber. The method is such as to enable an open end of a syringe needle of a diluent syringe having a syringe chamber containing diluent in communication therewith to be moved into and withdrawn successively from the chambers so as to mix the diluent with the hazardous material. The method also contemplates procedures for separately refilling a dosage syringe and for relieving any residual pressure in the vial chamber with the use of an empty syringe prior to initial or final refilling of a dosage syringe. The reconstituting, pressure relief and/or refilling procedures all being performed in such a way as to substantially prevent the hazardous material from entering the immediate atmospheric environment.

An automatic injector apparatus comprising an outer housing assembly, a hypodermic needle, first and second containers, a first liquid medicament ingredient in the first container and a second medicament ingredient in the second container, first and second pistons in the first and second containers respectively, a releasable stressed spring arrangement capable of being released twice, once for movement through a first piston moving stroke and second through a second piston moving stroke, a first releasing device operable in response to a first predetermined actuating procedure for accomplishing a first release of the spring arrangement so as to effect movement of the first piston through a liquid medicament ingredient moving stroke causing the liquid medicament ingredient to mix with the medicament ingredient in the second container to form liquid medicament and a second releasing device operable in response to a second actuating procedure for accomplishing a second release of the spring arrangement so as to effect movement of the second piston through an operative stroke causing the hypodermic needle to be moved into the muscle tissue of the patient and the liquid medicament to be moved through the needle into the muscle tissue of the patient.

Automatic medicament ingredient mixing and injecting apparatus

A disposable hypodermic syringe having a cylindrical barrel open at both its forward and rearward ends, with the forward tooled end having a necked down portion terminating in an annular flange having an outer diameter greater than that of the necked down portion and less than that of the cylindrical barrel, a stopper positioned in the necked down portion of the cylindrical barrel to seal off the tooled end of the barrel, a resilient plastic needle hub assembly fitted on the forward end of the cylindrical barrel. The hub assembly including a cylindrical body having both a forward and a rearward end, a nose portion extending forwardly from the forward end of the cylindrical body, a needle affixed to the nose portion away from the forward end of the cylindrical body, the cylindrical body being sized whereby it will resiliently fit over and engage the annular flange of the necked down portion of the cylindrical barrel to operatively retain the needle hub assembly on the cylindrical barrel with a sleeve of heat shrinkable plastic fitted over a portion of the hub assembly and contiguous cylindrical barrel whereby when heat is applied the sleeve will shrink to firmly engage the aforedescribed syringe portions and thereby provide an air tight seal between the hub body and the cylindrical barrel and in addition whereby the shrink tension will cause the hub body to more firmly engage the annular flange.

A cartridge assembly having a cylindrical body, with its forward end being packed down to form an annular flange, a hub fitted on the annular flange, a diaphragm seal positioned on the forward face of the annular flange and held in sealing position by the hub fitted on the annular flange, a piston slidably carried in the rearward portion of the body, a liquid medicament held in the body in the space between the diaphragm and the piston, the hub being made of transparent plastic material and having a first cylindrical portion having an internal diameter sized to fit over the annular flange of the cartridge, a second cylindrical portion extends from the first cylindrical portion and has a diameter less than the first cylindrical portion, a third cylindrical portion extends from the second cylindrical portion and has a diameter less than the second cylindrical portion, a fourth cylindrical portion extends from the third cylindrical portion and has a diameter less than the third cylindrical portion, the fourth cylindrical portion having an internal diameter sized to receive the non-patient end of the needle, the chamber formed by the second cylindrical portion constitutes the chamber for the ballooning of the diaphragm when under medicament pressure, this chamber being provided with a spike having its point directed toward the diaphragm and adapted to pierce same upon sufficient ballooning thereof.

A plural dosage automatic injector comprising an elongated tubular housing assembly having side by side first and second medicament injecting assemblies each including a container, a hypodermic needle, a liquid medicament and a plunger within the forward end portion thereof and, first and second stressed spring assemblies in the rearward end portion thereof disposed in operative relation with said first and second medicament injecting assemblies for operating the latter. A manually operable safety device is provided which includes a first safety pin operable (1) when in a safety position with respect to the first spring stressed assembly to prevent actuation and release thereof and (2) when removed from its safety position to permit the actuation and release of the second stressed spring assembly. A mechanical motion transmitting mechanism is provided which is operable to transmit a movement occurring as a result of the actuation and release of the first stressed spring assembly into a secondary actuating movement operable to (1) effect a relative movement between the automatic safety pin and the second stressed spring assembly sufficient to remove the automatic safety pin from its safety position and (2) thereafter actuate and release second stressed spring assembly to operate the second medicament injecting assembly.

Plural dosage automatic injector with improved safety

A medicament discharging device and an expendable clip thereon containing a plurality of medicament cartridges. Each of the cartridges comprises a container, a dosage of medicament in the container, a hypodermic needle sealingly contained in a sterile condition in cooperating relation with the container and a movable wall means at one end of the container operable when moved through a discharging stroke to cause the sharpened end of the needle to move outwardly out of sealingly contained relation and into the muscle tissue of a patient and the medicament dosage to move outwardly of the container into the opposite end of the needle and out of the sharpened end thereof into the muscle tissue of the patient. The medicament discharging device comprises a portable manually engageable housing structure defining a medicament cartridge receiving station, a plunger mounted in the housing structure for movement through the medicament cartridge receiving station in repetitive operative cycles each of which includes a discharging stroke in one direction and a return stroke in the opposite direction, a manually actuatable mechanism for effecting movement of the plunger through an operative cycle, and a releasable connection between the housing structure and the clip for securing the same in operative relation so that successive cartridges in the clip will be presented in the medicament cartridge receiving station of the housing structure for injection in response to an operative cycle.

Apparatus for resuscitating a plurality of patients comprising four face mask assemblies each of which is operable to be operatively connected with a patient so as to permit fresh air to be supplied to the lungs of such patient and four bellows assemblies actuated by a cam track rotated either by a suitable clutched electric motor or by hand crank for delivering successive volumes of fresh air under pressure to each face mask assembly at a desired cyclical frequency wherein each cycle includes said fresh air delivery as a minor part thereof. Each face mask assembly has operatively associated therewith (1) a stale air exhaust valve assembly for permitting air expelled from the lungs of each patient during the remaining major part of each cycle associated therewith to be exhausted to atmosphere, (2) a medicament injector for selectively supplying a respiratory medicament dosage into the fresh air delivered to each face mask assembly, and (3) a pressure gauge for indicating the operative pressure adjacent the face mask assembly so as to enable the operator to readily determine a bronchoconstrictive condition of a patient operatively connected with the associated face mask assembly so that the associated selective medicament injector is selected to deliver medicament only during the minor cycle part when the fresh air is delivered.

An assembly for enabling a respiratory medicament to be administered to a gas mask wearer without breaking the seal between the face blank of the gas mask and the wearer's face. The assembly comprises a container, a respiratory medicament dosage releasably disposed within the container, and a shroud covering the container for (1) interiorly communicating with the exterior of a normally closed passage extending through the face blank of the gas mask to the sealed interior thereof, (2) exteriorly isolating the container and (3) enabling the respiratory medicament dosage to be released from the container while the interior communicating and exterior isolating relationships are maintained.
