The present invention relates to dispersants containing at least two lipophilic groups (e.g., alkenyl-substituted acylating agent, such as, dodecyl succinic anhydride), and the dispersants contain a hydrophilic component (e.g., alkylene glycol, polyalkylene glycol) present in an amount sufficient to at least partially disperse the amphiphilic compound in aqueous media (e.g., 30 wt % to 80 wt %). The invention further provides for dispersants as phosphate, sulphonate, and phosphite derivatives thereof. The invention further provides for the use of the dispersants in tinter compositions (e.g., universal tinter) and reduced shade paints.

Dispersants

Quenching oil compositions comprising (1) an oil having kinematic viscosity (ASTM Test Method D-445) at 40&#xb0; C. ranging from about 4 to about 45 mm2sec&#x2212;1 (about 40 to about 210 Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS)) and having a saturated content from about 80% to about 100%; and (2) an alkali metal salt of saligenin derivative and optionally, further comprising at least one of (3) an aliphatic polyolefin having Mn ranging from about 300 to about 10,000; (4) at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of hydrocarbyl substituted phenols, salicylic acids, carboxylic acids, and sulfonic acids; and (5) at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl substituted succinic esters, amides, ester-amides, imides, amine salts, acid-esters, acid-amides ester-amine salts, amide-amine-salts and acid-amine salts, and methods of heat treating metals comprising employing said quenching oils.

Stable emulsions from gelled overbased substrates with surfactants and aqueous liquids

The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a gelled overbased calcium carboxylate which involves carbonating a carboxylic acid of 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the presence of a promoter system consisting of water and an alcohol of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such that the mole ratio of alcohol to water is substantially constant and is such that the viscosity of the reaction mixture during carbonation step does not exceed 1 pascal second (1000 centipoise). This process prevents excessive thickening of the reaction mixture in a manufacturing unit during carbonation and affords ample time to complete the process of carbonation without premature crystallization of the calcium carbonate formed during overbasing.

Overbased carboxylate gels

Gelled overbased materials are prepared by mixing an overbased composition of a metal salt of an organic acid material containing at least 8 carbon atoms, a metal salt of an organic acid material containing fewer than 6 carbon atoms, and a metal carbonate in an oleophilic medium, with an alcohol or an alcohol-water mixture, and heating the mixture.
