A hearing assistance device includes two transducers which react to a characteristic of an acoustic wave to capture data representative of the characteristic. The device is arranged so that each transducers is located adjacent a respective ear of a person wearing the device. A signal processor processes the data to provide relatively more emphasis of data representing a first sound source the person is facing over data representing a second sound source the person is not facing. At least one speaker utilizes the data to reproduce sounds to the person. An active noise reduction system provides a signal to the speaker for reducing an amount of ambient acoustic noise in the vicinity of the person that is heard by the person.

Hearing assistance apparatus

An active suspension system for a vehicle including elements for developing and executing a trajectory plan responsive to the path on which the vehicle is traveling. The system may include a location system for locating the vehicle, and a system for retrieving a road profile corresponding to the vehicle location.

An active wheel damper. An active suspension damps vertical displacement of an unsprung mass in a frequency range and reduces vertical displacement of a sprung mass in another frequency range.

Active wheel damping

A method of distinguishing sound sources includes the step of transforming data, collected by at least two transducers which each react to a characteristic of an acoustic wave, into signals for each transducer location. The transducers are separated by a distance of less than about 70 mm or greater than about 90 mm. The signals are separated into a plurality of frequency bands for each transducer location. For each band a comparison is made of the relationship of the magnitudes of the signals for the transducer locations with a threshold value. A relative gain change is caused between those frequency bands whose magnitude relationship falls on one side of the threshold value and those frequency bands whose magnitude relationship falls on the other side of the threshold value. As such, sound sources are discriminated from each other based, on their distance from the transducers.

Sound discrimination method and apparatus

An audio reproduction system substantially fits the dynamic range of recorded and broadcast music (or other type of audio content) into a desired output dynamic range, bounded by the available dynamic range of the listening environment. In some scenarios the output dynamic range may be defined as a function of the ambient noise level present in the environment and the maximum output capabilities of audio system. A listener may adjust the desired prominence of the program with a user control, with foreground (louder and more dynamic) as one extreme and background (quieter and less dynamic) as the other extreme. A control to adjust prominence, when used to provide background reproduction, may reduce the average volume of a reproduced signal and fit the input signal dynamic range into a suitably smaller but desired output signal dynamic range.

In response to a change in a circuit parameter of a converter delivering power to a load, the converter is operated in a mode in which additional power is supplied to the load by a capacitive element that is in parallel with the converter, the circuit parameter including a parameter other than input current.

Controlling a power converter

A noise reducing AM receiver has a receiving stage for receiving an AM signal of carrier frequency separated from that in an adjacent channel by a predetermined spacing and that may have a noise component. A detecting stage is coupled to the receiving stage for detecting at least a first portion of the received AM signal. A filter is coupled to the detecting stage for extracting a spectral component from at least a first portion of the received AM signal. A noise detector is coupled to the filter for detecting the presence of a predetermined amount of noise in the spectral component and for providing a blanking control signal in the presence of at least the predetermined amount of noise. A first noise blanker is responsive to the blanking control signal to process at least one portion of the received signal in response to the control signal to reduce the audibility of the noise component.

Noise reducing

Diversity reception apparatus includes a number of receivers each having a distortion detector. There is a common output channel. A comparator compares the signals detected by detectors and provides a control signal to a selector or switching circuit that couples that receiver having the preferred received signal to the common output channel.

Diversity reception with selector switching at superaudible rate

A powered loudspeaker system has a cabinet. The cabinet has at least one electroacoustical transducer and a power amplifier coupled to the electroacoustical transducer. Dynamic equalization circuitry coupled to the power amplifier provides a predetermined desired dynamic equalization for the electroacoustical transducer in the cabinet when normally positioned in a listening room.
