Heat-sensitive compositions which rapidly develop color upon heating and rapidly discharge their color upon cooling, comprising an intimate mixture of a 3,3-bis (p-aminophenyl) phthalide and an organic acid. The color-producing and color-discharging cycle may be reproduced many times without noticeable change in response. The novel compositions of the invention are useful as temperature indicators, thermal display media, safety papers and validation devices.

Color reversing compositions

A device for giving a visual indication of the amount of residual ethylene oxide present in ethylene oxide treated solid hospital articles and other health devices. The amount of residual ethylene oxide is indicated by the difference in color exhibited by different sensitized areas of the device in the form of an opaque dark colored support member having bonded to its surface a thin film of a cholesteric liquid crystal composition in a solid film-forming binder. The film is made by laying down on the surface of the support member a solution or dispersion of liquid crystals which exhibits a change in color when in contact with ethylene oxide at a temperature from 60.degree. to 100.degree. F. in a solution of the solid binder, then evaporating the solvent. As prepared, the film is in a form adapted to be packaged with goods to be subjected to sterilization with ethylene oxide, a portion of the film being sealed within a transparent enclosure the walls of which possess a permeability to ethylene oxide no greater than that of the material of the treated goods.

A heat sensitive recording member capable of acquiring a stable color in selected regions contrasting with the background color of the coated substrate upon exposing these regions to an elevated temperature and comprising a paper or polymeric film substrate and a heat sensitive coating comprising (1) an adduct or mixture of color-forming lactones or spiropyrans with a cyclic polyketo color precursor, (2) a polymeric binder which bonds the reactants to the substrate and optionally (3) a molecular complex between a phenolic compound and an amine and/or an activator to lower the temperature of color formation.

Heat-sensitive recording composition with mixed color precursors

Paper, cotton cloth, wood, fiberboard, and other cellulosic products are first treated with an organic base and then treated with a halosilane. This results in the formation of an amine/silane complex within the cellulose fibers as well as on the surface of the cellulosic product. This treatment imparts oil and water repellency, adhesive properties, and dimensional stability to cellulosic products.

Complex amine/silane treated cellulosic materials

A two-layer adhesive coating having a dry, non-tacky surface convertible to a permanently adhesive surface by application of heat. A first co-reactant in an adhesive-containing base layer combines with a second co-reactant applied to the base layer to form a dry, non-tacky barrier layer comprising a molecular complex which dissociates upon heating to form a permanently adhesive surface.

Heat-activated adhesive coating

A flat, water-remoistenable, adhesive-coated paper having superior resistance to curling ordinarily accompanying changes in atmospheric humidity. A powdered adhesive is mixed with a solution of triethanolamine plasticizer in toluene and methanol to form a dispersion in which outer surface portions of the adhesive particles are plasticized. When the dispersion is applied to paper and solvent evaporated, the resulting coating comprises a multiplicity of sintered adhesive particles having plasticized outer surface portions joined to one another and to the paper.

Curl-resistant adhesive-coated paper

A heat-sensitive coating adapted to acquire a stable color contrasting with the background color in selected regions that are heated to an elevated temperature. The coating comprises (1) a piperidine derivative substituted in the 4 position with an aromatic group and a hydroxyl group or a hydrogen atom, (2) a cyclic polyketo compound reactive with the piperidine derivative to form a dye, and (3) a polymeric binder for binding the reactants to a substrate.

Heat-sensitive coating composition with 4-aromatic and hydroxy

A heat-sensitive recording composition containing normally colorless lactones or spiropyran compounds in combination with hydrogen bonded molecular complexes of phenolic compounds having a dissociation temperature ranging from 50.degree. to 220.degree. C. The composition of the invention is less sensitive to pressure and less susceptible to background staining, image flooding, moisture sensitivity, odor, railroading and burnout problems as compared with compositions in which phenolic compounds are not complexed.

Heat sensitive recording composition containing a complexed phenolics

A heat reactive recording composition capable of acquiring a stable color in selected regions contrasting with the background color of the sheet upon exposing these regions to an elevated temperature and comprising a paper or polymeric film substrate and a coating comprising (1) an N-substituted condensation product of a heterocyclic diimino compound and an aromatic aldehyde and (2) a cyclic polyketo compound reactive with amines and amides at elevated temperatures to form a color.
