A phase separator and associated method for removal of water from a sample containing analytes in an organic solvent including a vertically extending body portion for vertical extension into a receptacle, the body portion including at least one vertically extending membrane portion on at least one side thereof and a port for introduction of solvent.

Water separation from solvent

A heat treating furnace is disclosed for nitride case hardening and gas cooling a stationary workload in the same furnace which is comprised of a single chamber and an access door. The chamber is segregated into an outer portion and an inner portion, with the inner portion being adapted to receive the workload to be nitride case hardened through the access door. The inner portion is surrounded by graphite insulation to retain the gas used to nitride case harden the workload. The inner portion further includes a plurality of graphite resistance heating elements and a plurality of graphite plates juxtaposed in near proximity to the graphite resistance heating elements forming a conduit or plenum between them. The inner portion further includes a fan assembly including a graphite radial fan wheel adapted to circulate the nitriding gas within the inner portion and through the conduit to provide uniform nitride case hardening of the workload.

A technique for separating, identifying and measuring ions in solution by capillary zone electrophoresis is described, which provides improved sensitivity and resolution of anionic species. The method involves introducing a sample containing the ionic species into a narrow bore capillary filled with a carrier electrolyte containing a selected light-absorbing anion. An electrical potential is applied across the capillary column causing the ions to elute according to their ionic mobility. Both UV absorbing and UV-transparent ions can be detected and quantitated by UV/visible photometric monitoring.

Method for separating ionic species using capillary electrophoresis

A method for performing capillary electrophoresis with improved regularity of migration time of the analytes is disclosed. A capillary electrophoresis system includes a fused silica capillary, a high voltage power supply, electrolyte reservoirs at both ends of the capillary, means for injecting a sample, and a detector. After separation, analytes within the sample are identified by comparing their migration time with the migration time of internal or external standards. Since migration times are dependent on the concentration of the injected sample, identification of unknown analytes can often be difficult or subject to error without the use of such standards. These problems associated with concentration dependent migration time are substantially eliminated by using a combination of high voltage power supply running modes (i.e. constant current, constant voltage or constant power) during the course of the analysis. The control of the high voltage power supply can either be set before a run begins, or controlled directly using feedback from the separation in real time.

Method for sample analysis using capillary electrophoresis

A sample preparation process and apparatus are provided for samples to be analyzed subsequently, such as by liquid chromatography. The sample is passed in contact with an ion exchange polymer which is characterized by being capable of facilitating removal of one or more undesired ions from the sample to be replaced with an ion transferred from the bound exchange site of the polymer and through the polymer. The polymer is prewashed with water to remove substantially all leachable species from the polymer. In one embodiment, the polymer is coated with a color indicator capable of changing color when the polymer is depleted of the ion to be transferred therefrom. The ion exchange capacity of the apparatus can be significantly expanded by using a counter ion donating solution capable of replacing the bound ions at the ion exchange sites as they become exchanged for the undesired ions from the sample.

An improved gradient ion chromatography process is disclosed. The process employs a gradient eluent which is maintained in a substantially isoconductive state throughout each sample run. By maintaining the gradient in an isoconductive state, conductivity detection and analysis of eluted analytes is enhanced.

The method involves subjecting a sample containing the ionic species a light-absorbing material and a quaternary ammonium salt to an electrical current in a capillary column causing the ions to elute according to their ionic mobility. The ionic species are detected and quantitated by UV/Visible photometric monitoring.

A method and apparatus for the simultaneous analysis of borate and chloride ions in a liquid sample, such as a sample of nuclear reactor water, by ion chromatographic techniques are disclosed. The ion chromatographic system employed includes an exclusion column, an anion exchange column, and means for alternately directing effluent from said exclusion column to refractive index detecting means or void volume from the exclusion column and second eluent through the anion exchange column to conductivity detecting means.
