A method of shortening an end of a well car includes removing a plurality of parts that would inhibit the shortening process; cutting a shear plate and a set of side sill angles at a location on the well side of the end assembly; detaching the end assembly from a main body of the well car; on each side of the main body: cutting the top tube at a location above a monument plate that is just beyond a reinforcement plate attached to the monument plate; cutting through a weld between the monument and reinforcement plates and a side sheet; cutting through the side sheet generally at the attachment location of the monument and reinforcement plates; and cutting the shear plate of the main body with a contoured cut such that the remaining shear plate has a contoured pattern substantially matching the cut shear plate under the removed end assembly.

A removable bulkhead for a railcar is provided, wherein the railcar includes a pair of spaced-apart side sills, at least one side stake pocket, and at least one end stake pocket. The removable bulkhead includes a support structure removably attachable to the railcar. The support structure of the removable bulkhead includes at least one bottom connecting mechanism, and the bottom connecting mechanism is receivable in a corresponding end stake pocket of the railcar. The removable bulkhead further includes at least one stabilizing mechanism operatively connecting the support structure to the railcar.

The non-pressure head includes a cylinder and a piston connected thereto for reciprocal movement along a piston travel axis. The present invention relates to the connection of removable and replaceable equipment to a structural member. The invention is particularly advantageous in environments where there is vibration or movement, such as with a tractor-trailers, railroad freight containers, airplane or the like. The present invention provides a triple acting wedge boltless connector system for connecting a mounting member to a structural member. The boltless connector system of the present invention tends to tighten and more securely engage when subject to vibration or movement. Consequently, vibration does not loosen the boltless connection but instead makes the connection more secure. Thus, there is no need for threaded fasteners and washers. The present invention also facilitates easy removal of the equipment from the main structure.

An anti-pilferage device is attached to the car body of a railroad flatcar of the type for carrying containers. The device has a mounting plate attached to the car frame at a point adjacent the doors of a container loaded on the car. A barrier is tiltably supported on the mounting plate in a manner which permits free movement if the barrier is bumped during loading of a container. The barrier is movable between a raised, operative position and a lowered, retracted position. A spring biases the barrier to the operative position, wherein it is in the path of a swinging container door to prevent it from being opened. In the retracted position the barrier is below the level of the container floor. A plurality of anti-pilferage devices may be mounted on the car to accommodate containers of various lengths. The barriers are automatically movable between the retracted position and operative position without the need for manual actuation.

Anti-pilferage device for container-carrying railroad flatcars

An articulated railroad flat car for transporting four short or three long semi-trailers comprises two units connected by a drawbar. A plurality of semi-trailer hitches are mounted on the units. The hitches are suitably spaced for securing either three long trailers or four standard trailers, using overhead loading or circus loading. When three long trailers are loaded, the middle trailer is attached to a hitch on one of the units and has its tandem resting on the other unit. The unit on which the tandem rests has a widened floor section at its end adjacent the drawbar to accommodate turning or skewing of the tandem when the car negotiates a curve.

A single axle railroad wheel truck is disclosed having two wheels joined by a single axle. A frame supported on the wheels and axle defines four spaced apart hanger flanges. A pair of cross members parallel to the axle for supporting a railroad car body are supported on pairs of hanger members directly connected between a pair of said hanger flanges and each one of the cross members. Springs are disposed upon the cross members for supporting a car body thereon.

Articulated rail car for vehicular trailers

Disclosed is an articulated rail car for transporting two large wheeled vehicular truck trailers in 'piggyback' fashion. The articulated rail car comprises two separate car bodies each supported by single axle railroad wheel truck assemblies mounted at each end of each body. A semi-permanent coupling joins the two car bodies so that the car can articulate around curves and bends in the railroad track. Utilization of the single axle trucks permits the rail car to maintain the normal number of axles (four) for rail cars even though the car is articulated in the center. The car bodies comprise a central spine extending upwardly along the length of the car for providing vertical strength. A tire support surface extends outwardly from each side of the central spine below the level of the central spine so that the vertical height of the wheel vehicular trailers transported by the articulated rail car is reduced allowing easier passage under structures and through tunnels. The car bodies also each include fifth wheel structures which support and unwheeled end of the vehicular trailers and absorb the vibrational shocks normally experienced by moving rail cars.

A hatch latch mechanism for a railway hopper car having a longitudinally extending handle pivotally and slidingly linked to a hopper car roof which can be upwardly and rearwardly rotated to extend entrappingly across an outboard projection of a hatch cover holddown bar. The handle includes a bottom camming portion downwardly engageable with the outboard projection to compress the hatch cover gasket as the handle is rearwardly rotated to seal the hatch; thereafter, the handle is urged forward in slidingly upward engagement about the outboard projection of the holddown bar by the upward force of the compressed gasket against the hatch cover to insure automatic positive locking of the latch.

A hinged hatch cover for the longitudinal hatch opening of a railway hopper car includes a hinged hold down arm which is adapted to be moved into a lock position relative to the hatch cover, the hold down arm including a projecting end portion which is engaged by a manually movable lever slidably supported on a pedestal, the same being engageable with the hold down arm for releasably securing the hatch cover in a lock and sealing position relative to the hatch opening.
