An electronic typographic apparatus includes a multiline display, the top of the display being justified and the lower line constituting a data entry line. Coded typographic data is stored in a character memory, the dot format for the display of characters in different scan lines being produced upon application of stored character data to character generating read only memories. The data entry position of the data entry line of the display is stored and new data is entered into the character memory with counting circuits being employed to keep track of the data entry line and position. The display is 'rolled up' one line upon receipt of a carriage return signal, and in the backspacing function, stored data is deleted. Backspacing may proceed into a line previously rolled up, in which case all of the lines are rolled down. The characters are displayed with proportional widths, as a function of a Character Clock signal generated from a read only memory instantaneously responsive to coded signals of the character memory just prior to the display of elements of a character. Word spaces of the top line of the display are counted to develop justification data for justifying the top display line, the justification data being stored in a separate memory and 'stretching' the word spaces of the top display line by inhibiting the character clock, while the display scan continues, for the determined periods. Once justification is complete, the aforementioned determined periods are digitized and directed to the hard copy printing device to define the amount of 'stretching' required. Tab stops are stored in a separate memory, and a circuit responsive to a tab signal stored in the character memory also inhibits continuation of the character clock signal until a tab stop signal is received from the tab stop memory. A special timing circuit determines when a key has been depressed for more than the normal amount of time, and then activates a gating circuit to initiate repetitive key operation.

Electronic typographical display device with justification feature

A mechanism which provides bi-directional movement of the carrier of an electric typewriter incorporating proportional spacing. A ratchet arrangement is operable in both directions to provide the desired proportional spacing increments, with rotation of a ratchet wheel in the clockwise direction being controlled by engagement of an associated pawl with one of a plurality of stop engaging surfaces of a control member which sets the number of proportional spacing increments desired. For rotation of the ratchet wheel in the counterclockwise direction, a solenoid is coupled to the control member to momentarily rotate it clockwise until a stop engaging surface thereof abuts a selected stop surface corresponding to the number of proportional spacing increments desired, and causing the pawl associated with the ratchet wheel to move clockwise by a corresponding number of ratchet teeth--after which the solenoid is released, permitting a cocked spring to return the control member to its initial position and cause the pawl to rotate the ratchet wheel counterclockwise by a corresponding number of proportional spacing increments.

The display is generated by sequentially reading characters from a circulating memory corresponding to a display line, in response to stepping pulses. The characters are displayed with proportional widths, as a function of an asynchronous pulsed stepping signal generated from a read only memory instantaneously responsive to coded signals of the character memory just prior to the display of elements of a character. The time interval between successive stepping pulses corresponds to the widths of characters to be displayed. Rapid repetitive display of characters or spaces is provided in response to depression of corresponding keys for more than a predetermined time interval.

The machine will produce unjustified typed lines and will automatically encode for controlling another machine to print justified lines, as a result of a single series of manual keyboard composing operations and automatic code controlled reproducing operations for producing a justified copy of a literal text, respectively. The machine includes a delete key and automatic deleting and back spacing means that reverses the machine and deletes codes from a code medium according to previously encoded information for back space correction purposes. The machine operates much like a normal office typewriter and may be operated by a person with a little more than normal typewriting skills for encoding a justified corrected text and function control codes. The operator need not be concerned with the set width of characters or spaces in order to back space and delete, since the deleting and back spacing is performed accurately and automatically upon depression of the single delete key. Coordinated back spacing of the literal text operations, reversing of functions and automatic deleting of the individual respective codes is performed automatically in accordance with the codes previously encoded and then being deleted on the code medium. Thus, there can be no error between the forward and delete operations.

A system for producing signals for proportional display of characters on a display device. The system utilizes a memory means for storing codes for a text and means for sequencing through the memory. The output of the memory which addresses (1) a character dot generator ROM and (2) a character width defining ROM. A shift register receives parallel inputs from the dot generator ROM and delivers a sequence of output levels to control the intensity of a display oscilloscope beam. Another shift register receives parallel inputs from the character width ROM (2) one input at a time, so that its output pulse occurs after the writing of the character is finished. Means is provided for applying the pulse output of the parallel input shift register to advance the character memory means to the next character to be displayed.

In the automatic reproduction of text, in order to allow time for completion of operating steps, the presentation of new coded information to the machine is responsive to completion of the function of the next preceding coded information.
