A compact core and ejector assembly includes an elongate core terminating in a male mold component and including a cylindrical shoulder which supports the top plate of an associated core support frame. The shoulder includes opposing, longitudinally-extending slots which receive jaw elements, which are pivotally mounted on a reciprocating knock out plate, and therefore guide the jaw elements during the ejection procedure. The top plate, knock out plate and core plate are cut away so that rows of cores may be arranged in a densely packed configuration. In a preferred embodiment, the lateral sides of the top, knock out and core plates have a cut away or sinusoidal shape so that abutting rows fit in an overlapping relationship.

A light weight filament wound pressure vessel for retaining gases under high pressure is formed with a barrier liner, in which the liner comprises a single layer of biaxially stretched and oriented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic material.

A container and pressure sealing closure combination in which the closure includes a rim portion engaging the mouth of the container, a substantially rigid central portion and an annular toggle portion pivotally connected to and interconnecting the rim portion and central portion, whereby upward movement of the central portion in response to internal pressure of the contents of the container pivots the toggle portion to urge the rim portion substantially radially outwardly against the mouth, thereby effecting a seal. In a preferred embodiment, the inner surface of the container mouth includes a plurality of axially-extending channels for conducting pressurized gaseous contents of the container between the closure and the container to the ambient. The outer surface of the mouth includes an annular recess which receives a plurality of radially inwardly projecting ribs on the rim portion, thereby effecting engagement between the closure and container. The closure includes a tab which is pivoted upwardly to remove the closure from the container, and the rim portion includes a plurality of sets of radially extending slots which fracture when the tab is pivoted upward, thereby preventing reattachment of the closure. Also in the preferred embodiment, the container includes an annular base shaped to receive the closure.

A blown bottle useful for containing a carbonated beverage bottle is formed with an annular swingle thickness depending skirt formed integrally with the bottle bottom providing a self-standing support for the bottle. A parison or preform for the blow molding of bottle is formed with a rounded, closed bottom portion and a cylindrical and integral annular single thickness skirt portion, for use in blow molding of a carbonated beverage bottle having an integral skirt for free-standing. The method of making a self-standing bottle, such as for carbonated beverages and the like, includes the forming of a bottle preform with an annular depending skirt which surrounds a closed bottom portion, and blowing the preform while gripping the skirt portion and spreading it outwardly and downwardly in relation to the orientation of the bottle to form an annular support skirt or platform in the blown bottle.

Apparatus and method for forming a self-standing skirt on the pressure bottom of a blow-molded carbonated beverage container. The preform is formed with an annular depending skirt, and the skirt is stretched with a stretch mechanism which engages all but a lower portion of the preform, so that during the stretching of the preform concurrently with the blowing of the preform in a bottle mold, the lower portion folds inwardly to form a bottom ledge on the stretched skirt. The mold is provided with a centering mechanism for assuring the centering of the preform within the mold cavity to assure that the preform skirt receives the skirt stretching mechanism.

Apparatus for forming a self-standing skirt on the pressure bottom of a blow-molded carbonate beverage container. Apparatus is disclosed for the forming of an annular depending skirt on the bottom of a container, such as a carbonated beverage bottle, which includes a plurality of articulated fingers extending into the mold cavity having distal ends which are proportioned to be received within a preform skirt portion prior to the blowing of the preform. The fingers are operated by engagement of cam surfaces concurrently with the blowing of the preform into a mold cavity to cause a programmed expansion of the skirt portion into a final single thickness annular skirt on the finished container.

Apparatus for forming a blown plastic container

A parison ejector is used in combination with an injection molding apparatus of the type for molding parisons having an injector portion including a plurality of mold cavities communicating with a source of molten plastic material, an ejector portion for engaging the injector portion which includes a movable platen, a plurality of cores shaped and positioned to matingly engage the mold cavities, and an ejector frame which is carried by the movable platen and supports the cores. The parison ejector includes a hydraulic ram which actuates an ejector carriage which carries a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on the carriage and having mating ends which meet to form bearing surfaces which receive cams mounted in the ejector frame. The ends of the jaws form a portion of the mold and the parison is partly formed within it. Reciprocal movement of the ejector carriage with respect to the ejector frame causes the bearing race to move relative to the stationary cam thereby forcing the jaws apart so that the molded parison is removed from the end of the core. The cores preferably are hollow and include a helical pathway for a coolant to flow therethrough.

An injection molding apparatus includes an injector portion which includes a plurality of mold cavity modules each having a plurality of cavities cooled by fluid flowing through a plurality of cooling channels which communicates with a common coolant manifold. Each mold cavity module is supplied with molten plastic material by a separate manifold which consists of an elongated shell having an exterior surface defining at least one inlet sprue communicating with a source of plastic and a plurality of outlet gates each communicating with a cavity of the mold module, a tubular heating element positioned within the shell for heating the interior portion of the shell, and a plurality of runners extending from the inlet sprue to the outlet gates and spiral about the heating rod so that molten plastic material may flow from the inlet sprue through the runners to the outlet gates and receive heat energy from the heating rod.

A one-piece plastic closure mechanism is provided which incorporates two flexible living hinge sections so that the leaves of the closure mechanism can pivot through the angles required for locking and unlocking a container cover from a container base. The closure mechanism may be attached to the base by screws, staples, or the like or may be integrally molded with the container to eliminate any post-molding assembly steps. One leaf of the closure mechanism contains a slot which engages a protrusion such as a tab on the container cover to lock the cover and base when the mechanism is closed. The container is designed so that individual containers are nestable for shipment, storage, and display. The interior of the container cover is provided with a clip for holding a writing implement and with a series of vertically upstanding ridges so that documents can be viewed in an upright position when the container is open.

A preform having a neck portion and a tubular body is inserted into a prefabricated attachment ring having a centrally located opening therein smaller than the preform neck in a mold cavity. The attachment ring has a handle integrally attached thereto. The preform body is blow molded and expands to form a container. During expansion, the preform and attachment ring become interlocked to form a two-piece container having a handle.
