A reverse idler shaft and washer assembly particularly suited for use in a compound transmission includes a lubricating washer having at least one notch for collecting and directing lubricating oil through a reverse idler gear bearing such that lubrication passageways are eliminated from the reverse idler shaft. The lubricating washer includes an annular region capable of supporting a clamping load through the inner race of the reverse idler gear bearing to resist rotation while allowing the outer race and the associated reverse idler gear to rotate freely.

A fluid interface between fluid conduits (14, 56) defined in two members (12, 52) attached in surface (20)-to-surface (58) contact with an O-ring seal (64) resiliently received in a counterbore cavity (62) is provided. A test passage (54) is provided from the cavity to the exterior, which will be blocked by the seal and will allow limited fluid from the cavity to the exterior in the absence of the seal whereby the presence or absence of fluid flow through the test passage is indicative of the absence or presence, respectively, of a properly installed seal.

An X-control mechanism (200) using an improved and easily installed pivot pin (100) is provided for providing a cylindrical pivot surface (16) about which a pivot arm (8) is able to pivot in response to movement of a control block (6) that is selectively engageable by a primary shaft (3) movable by an operator. The pivoting of arm (8) is operative to slide an x control yoke (14) in an opposite direction along a fixedly secured control shaft (22) for selectively engaging mainshaft gears to a transmission mainshaft 32. Pivot pin (100) is operative to hold pivot arm (8) against the transmission housing (10) between an enlarged head (12) at one end and a snap ring (20) extending radially outwardly from an annular groove (18) adjacent the opposite end.

An apparatus for selection and engagement of selectable gear ratios in a change speed transmission is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a housing, a shaft mounted for relative axial and rotational movement in the housing, a plurality of shift forks, and a plurality of snap rings. Each of the shift forks includes a hub portion having a bore through which the shaft is received. Each of the snap rings is disposed about the shaft and abuts a corresponding shift fork. Each of the snap rings has a tooth which projects radially from the shaft. Each of the hub portions has a groove which is formed to receive a corresponding tooth such that when one of the grooves is not aligned with a corresponding tooth in response to rotation of the shaft, the other grooves are aligned with a corresponding tooth. Thus, only one shift fork is movable at any time.

Snap ring actuated single shaft shifting mechanism

An apparatus for selection and engagement of selectable gear ratios in a change speed transmission is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a shaft mounted in a housing, a plurality of shift forks, and a shift plate. Each of the shift forks is axially movable along the shaft. Each of the shift forks also has a projection extending therefrom. The shift plate has a plurality of first patterns therethrough. Each first pattern includes axial and transverse pathways arranged to receive a corresponding projection such that when one of the projections is not aligned in an axial pathway of one of the first patterns in response to lateral movement of a shifting actuator, the other projections are aligned in axial pathways similarly located in the other first patterns. Subsequent axial movement of the shifting actuator imparts movement to only one shift fork to engage the desired gear.
