An audio jack system includes a special audio jack adaptor that is particularly useful for digital players (e.g., cell phone, smartphone, MP3 player, computer, etc.) housed within watertight enclosures. When a headset is plugged directly into the digital player, the player's audio signal automatically goes to the headset, and the digital player's onboard speaker is silent. When nothing is plugged into the digital player, the audio signal automatically goes to the player's onboard speaker. When just the special adaptor is plugged into the player, the audio signal still goes to the onboard speaker; however, subsequently plugging the headset into the plugged-in special adaptor redirects the audio signal to the headset and not to the onboard speaker. To accomplish such results, a plug end of the adaptor includes a split-ring or split-tip set of open contacts that effectively close upon plugging the headset into a receptacle end of the adaptor.

The system and method of the present invention forms an item specific pattern on a plain or holographic metallized film or hot stamp foil, including an embossed substrate with or without holograms. A piezoelectric ink jet printhead includes a plurality of ink jet channels and respective ink jets that receive an etchant-resistant mask material for ejecting etchant-resistant mask material through the respective ink jets onto a metallized surface of the metallized film or hot stamp foil. A controller individually and digitally controls the ejection of etchant-resistant mask material in a programmed manner for ink jet printing on the metallized surface a unique pattern of etchant or etchant-resistant mask. Etchant etches the metallized surface into an item specific pattern using subsequently applied etchant that exposes the metallized surface devoid of the etchant-resistant mask.

System and method for forming a pattern on plain or holographic metallized film and hot stamp foil

The system and method of the present invention forms an item specific pattern on a plain or holographic metallized film or hot stamp foil, including an embossed substrate with or without holograms. An ink jet printhead includes a plurality of ink jet channels and respective ink jets that receive one of etchant or etchant-resistant mask material for ejecting etchant or etchant-resistant mask material through the respective ink jets onto a metallized surface of the metallized film or hot stamp foil. A controller individually and digitally controls the ejection of etchant or etchant-resistant mask material in a programmed manner for ink jet printing on the metallized surface a unique pattern of etchant or etchant-resistant mask. A method of forming a debit card and a debit card formed by the method are disclosed. A planar card member has opposing surfaces. A PIN is printed on one of the surfaces. The planar card member is advanced along a predetermined path of travel such as on a conveyor. A radiation cured, opaque scratch-off coating is applied onto the surface having the PIN such that the PIN is covered by the applied scratch-off coating. The scratch-off coating is radiation cured, preferably by ultraviolet radiation.

Debit card having applied personal identification number (PIN) and scratch-off coating and method of forming same

A telephone calling card includes a planar card member with a scratch-off label positioned on a surface of the planar card member. The scratch-off label includes a base label having an opaque, releasable film layer and a PIN printed on the opaque, releasable film layer. A scratch-off cover label is secured on the base label and has a scratch-off layer that covers the PIN to obscure from viewing the PIN. Upon application of a peeling force to remove the scratch-off cover label, the opaque, releasable film layer is removed and hides the printed PIN from viewing via the backside of the opaque, releasable film layer. In one aspect of the present invention, the scratch-off cover label is folded over the base label.

Debit card having secure scratch-off label strip with releasable layer and method of applying same

A rigid magnetic memory disc (,) is disclosed having a substantially flat, central hard core substrate (,) and an overlying smoothing layer (,) deposited thereon. The smoothing layer (,) is subsequently polished to a predetermined thickness. The smoothing layer (,) should be capable of having a surface finish better than approximately ten Angstroms Ra. After the smoothing layer (,) is polished, an appropriate magnetic medium (,) and alternately, a nonmagnetic finishing layer (,) are then applied to the rigid disc substrate (,) as necessary, ultimately rendering a finished magnetic disc. The flatness of the underlying central hard core substrate (,) and the flatness and smoothness of the smoothing layer (,), the overlying magnetic medium (,) and the overlying finishing layer (,) allows the read-write head (,) to pass over the magnetic medium (,), or the finishing layer (,), if present, at both a substantially constant and substantially low flying height, thus increasing the areal density of the rigid magnetic memory disc (,). Preferably, the typical flying height of the read-write head (,) is approximately less than two and one-half microinches.

Rigid disc substrate comprising a central hard core substrate with a hard, thermally and mechanically matched overlying smoothing layer and method for making the same

A rigid magnetic memory disc(28) is disclosed having a substantially flat, central hard core substrate(12) and an overlying smoothing layer(14) deposited thereon. The smoothing layer(14) is subsequently polished to a predetermined thickness. The smoothing layer(14) should be capable of having a surface finish better than approximately ten Angstroms Ra. After the smoothing layer(14) is polished, an appropriate magnetic medium(16) and alternately, a nonmagnetic finishing layer(16) are then applied to the rigid disc substrate(10) as necessary, ultimately rendering a finished magnetic disc. The flatness of the underlying central hard core substrate(12) and the flatness and smoothness of the smoothing layer(14), the overlying magnetic medium(16) and the overlying finishing layer(18) allows the read-write head(24) to pass over the magnetic medium(16),or the finishing layer(18), if present, at both a substantially constant and substantially low flying height, thus increasing the areal density of the rigid magnetic memory disc(28). Preferably, the typical flying height of the read-write head(24) is approximately less than two and one-half microinches.
