A cam phaser includes a rotor, a stator, and a cover. The rotor defines a first hole and a second hole and can rotate relative to the stator between a first intermediate position and a second intermediate position. The cover is mounted on the stator and defines a first lock pin seat and a second lock pin seat. The cam phaser includes a first lock pin and a second lock pin. The first lock pin can move along the first hole and into the first lock pin seat to lock the rotor relative to the stator at the first intermediate position. The second lock pin can move along the second hole and into the second lock pin seat to lock the rotor relative to the stator at the second intermediate position.

Variable cam phaser

A control valve includes a valve body, which defines first, second, and third valve passageways. The valve body also defines a supply passageway. The control valve includes a first spool movable relative to the valve body between first and second positions. The control valve includes a second spool movable relative to the valve body between open and closed positions. The supply passageway is in fluid communication with the first valve passageway when the first spool is in the first position. The supply passageway is in fluid communication with the second valve passageway when the first spool is in the second position. The supply passageway is in fluid communication with the third valve passageway when the second spool is in the open position. The second spool precludes fluid flow between the supply passageway and the third valve passageway when the second spool is in the closed position.

Control valve

A motion limiter system for a cam phaser includes a retractable motion limiter pin that is selectively extendable from a rotor in a cam phaser to contact a lobe on a stator to provide a positive stop for the rotor prior to engagement of a locking pin. Alternatively, the cam phaser may include two pins that are selectively extendable from opposite openings in a hole in the rotor to engage seats that are slightly offset from one another.

Cam phaser locking systems

A method of setting lash in a cam phaser includes rotating a stator having a lobe in a first direction so that the lobe contacts a motion limiter pin disposed within a first hole in a rotor, causing the compression of a spring until a motion limiter lock pin enters a groove on the motion limiter pin and contacts a wall at one end of the groove. The rotor is then rotated in conjunction with the stator in the first direction until a rotor locking pin that is disposed within a second hole in the rotor engages a lock pin seat on a cover at one end of the seat. The rotor is then held in place while rotating the stator in a second direction so that there is a gap between the wall at one end of the groove and the motion limiter locking pin.

Method of setting lash in a cam phaser

A partial assembly process for a vane-type cam phaser. A pulley/sprocket is loaded onto a first camshaft-shaped fixture with a cam nose extending beyond the length of an actual cam nose such that a phaser rotor containing a locking bolt, when mounted onto the cam nose, is displaced axially from the pulley/sprocket by an amount sufficient to set the axial engagement of the bolt upon final assembly. A stator is loaded onto the pulley/sprocket and is rotated clockwise until it contacts the rotor, thereby removing all rotational and radial lash from the system. One or more axial holes are bored through the pulley/sprocket and stator and a locking pin such as a roll pin is inserted to permanently pin the stator to the pulley/sprocket. Finally, the partially-assembled phaser is removed from the cam-like fixture, the rotor is fully seated against the pulley/sprocket, the locking bolt is withdrawn from the pulley/sprocket, the rotor is rotated to an intermediate position, and the phaser cover is added to the assembly.

Method for assembling a vane-type cam phaser

A process for forming a roller bearing comprising the steps of providing a cylindrical slug that comprises at least 0.7 weight percent carbon and up to 1.6 weight percent of at least one alloying element. The slug has lateral and side surfaces. A centered indentation is formed in each side surface. A circular chamfer surface is formed at the intersection of each side and each lateral surface, thereby producing an upsetting slug. The upsetting slug is cold formed, thereby deepening the centered indentations and forming a blank. The blank has a web separating the deepened indentations and end surfaces and chamfer surfaces that are substantially at net shape for the roller bearing. The web is removed from the blank, thereby forming a pierced blank having a through hole with an inner surface. The inner and lateral surfaces of the pierced blank are finished to the specified inner and outer diameters for the roller bearing.

Process for forming cold formed high-load bearing steel parts

A hydraulic lash adjuster for disposition between a rocker arm and a valve stem of an internal combustion engine comprises a body having an axially extending neck depending from a lower end thereof. An enlarged head portion extends from the terminal end of the neck and has a semispherical lower surface. A foot assembly includes a disk shaped foot with an upper surface, a lower surface and a cylindrical sidewall defining an outer perimeter. The upper surface has a socket configured to receive the enlarged head. The foot assembly further includes an inverted cup shaped retainer having a cylindrical wall and radial leaves extending inwardly from the upper end of the cylindrical wall, defining a central opening. The axially extending neck extends through the central opening and the opening has a diameter smaller than the enlarged head. The cylindrical wall of the retainer is parallel to the cylindrical sidewall of the foot and is sized to define a parallel frictional force therebetween sufficient to maintain engagement of the foot and retainer. The retainer operates to prevent disassembly of the body and the foot assembly.

Hydraulic element assembly

A hydraulic lash adjuster for an internal combustion engine, and a method of its construction is disclosed. The lash adjuster has a cylindrical follower body in which a tubular plunger is slidingly disposed. The plunger cooperates with the follower body to define a high pressure chamber therebetween which is supplied with fluid through a valved port. A low pressure chamber which operates to supply fluid to the high pressure chamber through the valved opening, is defined by an axial passage through the plunger. Fluid flows into and out of the low pressure chamber through a port in the wall of the plunger. Intermediate of the port and the valved opening is a radially inwardly extending annular shelf which is integral formed with the axial passage of the plunger using a mechanical shaving step to plow a portion of the plunger material from the wall of the axially extending passage. The annular shelf operates as a baffle to prevent loss of fluid from the low pressure chamber when the hydraulic lash adjuster is installed at an angle from vertical.
